My Favorite Films of Classic Works of Literature
By an Amazon.com customer
Oliver Twist (BBC, 1985)Oliver Twist (BBC, 1985)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.99
My favorite version of Oliver Twist because it contains the most essential aspects of the plot. While it might not substitute for actually reading the novel, it is close enough that a viewer of this version might be mistaken for someone who has actually read Charles Dickens' classic work. Other versions of merit as of 2009: Oliver Twist (2005) with Barney Clark Oliver! (1968) with Mark Lester.
Great Expectations (BBC, 1981)Great Expectations (BBC, 1981)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.99
I really do not feel any version has been made of Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations" which does Charles Dickens' novel true justice. However, this version is relatively accurate to the novel. Some of the acting may be marginal and some episodes become very boring, especially for people who do not really love everything Dickens. For lack of a really good version, this is the best.
Hard TimesHard Times
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.09
For lack of competition, this is the best version of Charles Dickens' novel against "facts and figures" and "out-of-control, ruthless capitalism." Certainly, I would like to see another version created. This version is not accurate enough to the novel for me, and it does not seem to convey well enough the descriptive passages of pain and suffering facing the working class of Coketown.”
Our Mutual FriendOur Mutual Friend
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.74
I have never read, "Our Mutual Friend" by Charles Dickens. I understand the novel is over 800 pages. However, this is the only version I have found that could possible give the novel justice. Therefore, while I cannot make any statements about how accurate this BBC production is, it must be more accurate than the cartoon versions.
Martin ChuzzlewitMartin Chuzzlewit
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $4.00
I enjoyed watching this production of Charles Dickens' novel "Martin Chuzzelwit." It was humorous, the acting I thought was well-done, and the script-writing decent. While I would not consider this anywhere near my favorite film, it is an excellent supplement for someone who has just read "Martin Chuzzlewit."
Dombey and SonDombey and Son
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.20
The only major film version currently available of Charles Dickens' lesser work, "Dombey and Son." Now, my mother loved this film. However, I preferred "The Mayor of Casterbridge" by Thomas Hardy for a film with similar themes.
The Old Curiosity ShopThe Old Curiosity Shop
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.71
Departing from the BBC, this "Old Curiosity Shop" is more appealing to me because it tells a moderately interesting story without reverting to tediously boring details. However, if you are trying to view a version of "The Old Curiosity Shop" in place of reading Charles Dickens' novel, then the BBC version is still better. Yet, I have found this to be one of Dickens’ most boring novels.
Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996)Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $9.99
This A&E production seems more interesting (and better picture quality) than its BBC 1980 associate. Having seen both, I can tolerate both as relatively accurate. The BBC likes to keep actual phrase from the novel, so possibly for people who wish to substitute a film for Jane Austen's novel, this might work. However, otherwise, the A&E version is the best for your time and money.
Emma (A&E, 1997)Emma (A&E, 1997)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.30
While I really enjoyed the character who played Knightley in the BBC 1972 version, I cannot recommend it. It really does not tell anything more than the A&E 1997 version. In fact, some elements of the plot are better told by the A&E 1997 version. A good example is the picnic scene where Emma makes an insensitive comment against Miss Bates.
Masterpiece Theatre: Northanger AbbeyMasterpiece Theatre: Northanger Abbey
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $13.49
I never saw the Masterpiece Theatre: Northanger Abbey. However, considering how poorly the BBC 1986 version was created, I doubt anyone could make a worse version. The music in the BBC version is horrible. Also, the BBC version is very disloyal to Jane Austen's novel. It seems difficult to believe the BBC could be disloyal, but in this circumstance, it is.
Silas Marner, The Weaver of RaveloeSilas Marner, The Weaver of Raveloe
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.72
Again, I chose the BBC version as the best (although the competition is very scarce.) Ben Kingsley (played in "Oliver Twist" (2005), "Gandhi" (where he won Best Actor), and "Schindler's List:") is Silas Marner. Since Silas Marner is the major character, Kingsley's performance saves the film from being completely boring. Novel loyal to plot.
The Scarlet Pimpernel Boxed SetThe Scarlet Pimpernel Boxed Set
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $11.44
Not very loyal to the novels. Some action sequences and dialogue may be difficult to understand without reading the novels, and even then, since the films are not very loyal to the novels, the viewer may still not completely understand. Chevelin is given a very large role in these films as Sir Percy Blakeney's foil, which may make the stories more interesting to some viewers.
The Grapes of WrathThe Grapes of Wrath
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.60
For lack of competition, this film version of John Steinbeck's novel "The Grapes of Wrath" is the best you can purchase. PS: Henry Fonda plays his part well as Tom Joad.
To Kill a Mockingbird (Collector's Edition)To Kill a Mockingbird (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $9.79
Even if there was competition, which there is not, I doubt any director and group of actors could top this wonderful academy award winning version of Harper Lee's classic novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." Gregory Peck's court scenes as he defends Tom Robinson of rape are unforgettable, as is the scene when Atticus Finch tells Scout that "it is a crime to kill a mockingbird."
A Night to Remember - Criterion CollectionA Night to Remember - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $19.99
While Walter Lord is not by any means my favorite author, this DVD version of the events leading up to the sinking of the Titanic is memorable... and so what if the Titanic was not christened for her maiden voyage as the film shows? The great acting, wonderful story, and interesting ending make up for it all.
The Great GatsbyThe Great Gatsby
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $4.50
I like the Robert Redford version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s "The Great Gatsby" more then the A&E version - just a personal preference. Both films are moderately well-done, both contain much of the same information (even if the information is presented differently). Meanwhile, I am still waiting for a really exceptional version of "The Great Gatsby."
The Count of Monte CristoThe Count of Monte Cristo
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $18.66
This film version (in French with English subtitles only) is my favorite version of Father Alexandre Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo." While my understanding of French is marginal, the acting in this film was very good. Gérald Depardieu is a wonderful French actor, who certainly performed excellently as the Count of Monte Cristo and his aliases.
Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada Television Series (12 DVD)Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada Television Series (12 DVD)
Buy new: $186.49 / Used from: $130.92
For Sherlock Holmes fans, I recommend "The Complete Granada Television Series" with Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes. Now, I understand this massive collection has two different actors play Dr. Watson, (Edward Hardwick being the Dr. W in most). However, each episode is relatively loyal to the short story. While the novels are somewhat compressed, even they are more accurate than the competition.
Lord of the Flies - Criterion CollectionLord of the Flies - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $12.23
Even though this film is black and white, I think it better conveys the terror each boy faces "from the monster within." Also, I believe the MGM "Lord of the Flies" is too violent in needless areas for young children. When I read "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding, I see a group of boys going backward in civilization, i.e. I see black-and-white.
Gettysburg (Widescreen Edition)Gettysburg (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $3.25
This film is quite lengthy and very much based on Shaara's Pulitzer Prize-Winning novel. However, the film does change some content from the novel. Yet, I find the changes acceptable. It helps when watching the film to have the novel, so that you can look at the maps in the novel. The film does not really give the viewer enough information to know what is going on with each conflict otherwise.
Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (Two-Disc Special Edition)Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $7.65
The Disney version is the best version, period. No competition from other versions, which seem to have found a need to change most of the plot. Note: No version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is very accurate with the novel because the novel is very long, very Latin-based, and very boring. However, the Disney version is THE CLOSEST TO THE BOOK.
The Prince and the PauperThe Prince and the Pauper
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $11.94
Best version available on DVD (although the color Disney version ASIN: B000E78DGC is my very favorite). This version is in black-and-white. Yet, the acting is decent, and it is relatively loyal to Mark Twain's novel, "The Prince and the Pauper." Hopefully, Disney will also re-release its 120-minute version on DVD for a new generation of literature aficionados.
MiddlemarchMiddlemarch
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.95
Best version of George Eliot's novel, "Middlemarch." However, I might also add it is the only version. What a choice!!
Jane Eyre (BBC, 1983)Jane Eyre (BBC, 1983)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.90
Difficult decision: the MT version is also well-done yet takes many liberties. BBC 73 costs too much. In 1983, I love Timothy Dalton's acting ability from the James Bond days. (Dalton will always be my Rochester.) While some minor points are compressed, this film is the best and most loyal "Jane Eyre.” 1973 is 2nd most loyal. Also recommended: Jane Eyre (BBC 1973)
The Tenant of Wildfell HallThe Tenant of Wildfell Hall
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.70
This is really the only version of merit that I know of Anne Bronte's novel that is currently available in the region 1 market. Therefore, it is both the best and worst version.
12 Angry Men (Decades Collection with CD)12 Angry Men (Decades Collection with CD)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $8.16
Best version of this play about justice and making certain jurors are just. Having both read the play and watched this black-and-white film, I can say that the film is very similar to the play. There are some minor details that the film leaves out, but otherwise, the film is very accurate. Again, Henry Fonda's acting is wonderful as he questions the other jurors about the facts of the murder case.
Daniel DerondaDaniel Deronda
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.70
I enjoyed watching this film based on George Eliot's novel by the same name. I believe the acting was very good. Furthermore, this is the only major version of the novel, so unfortunately, you can either like it or dislike it.
Masterpiece Theatre: Mill on the FlossMasterpiece Theatre: Mill on the Floss
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.92
This is better than the BBC version of the film, although it may be difficult to imagine worse. The BBC version was very boring, the acting was not very good, and the DVD quality only marginal 4.3 ratio. Masterpiece with Cheryl Campbell is the way to go.
Adam BedeAdam Bede
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.25
The only choice, again, for George Eliot's literary work "Adam Bede." I found the film only moderately interesting, but then again, it might just have been that the plot did not appeal to my literary interests.
Nicholas NicklebyNicholas Nickleby
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.87
The best of your choices. While there are more version to choose from, I really disliked the seemingly popular A&E stage version of Charles Dickens' very lengthy novel. As for the the Charles Hunnam version, I never viewed it, but I can imagine what it must be like based on what I know from reviews.
Henry Fielding's Tom JonesHenry Fielding's Tom Jones
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.81
Some call this A&E production vulgar and violent. 'Tis true, but it's a comedic drama in its vulgarity, violence, and drunkenness. Film seems to follow the book better than Finney 1963 production and is longer at 300 minutes.
Vanity Fair (A&E, 1998)Vanity Fair (A&E, 1998)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.90
While few competing television versions, I thought Andrew Davies did a good job in this A&E/BBC production. Potentially boring at points and slightly unclear at others, overall this is the version to see.
Animal FarmAnimal Farm
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $6.31
Not completely loyal to George Orwell, the film was still interesting. The ending especially attempts to affirm capitalism, which might have made Orwell uncomfortable. However, I think the animation and special effects were pretty good. Overall, a film worth watching.
The Anthony Trollope Collection (The Barchester Chronicles / He Knew He Was Right / The Way We Live Now)The Anthony Trollope Collection (The Barchester Chronicles / He Knew He Was Right / The Way We Live Now)
Buy new: $43.99 / Used from: $39.99
Best Anthony Trollope series I know of. Very interesting! Unfortunately, the BBC has not produced more adaptations of other Trollope novels. I especially liked "The Barchester Chronicles" for some reason (based of the novels "The Warden" and "Barchester Towers.") Slope makes a memorable villain.
Wuthering Heights (Masterpiece Theatre, 1998)Wuthering Heights (Masterpiece Theatre, 1998)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $10.48
My favorite of the three: 1992, 1998, & 2009. While none of the adaptations are as loyal as I would have liked, the 98's acting is good, the plot more understandable, and the mood better. My second favorite would be the 2009 adaptation (also Masterpiece). However, while it is longer and most expensive, I did not think it better than the 1998.
A Tale of Two Cities (Masterpiece Theatre, 1989)A Tale of Two Cities (Masterpiece Theatre, 1989)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $18.00
Film is most loyal color adaptation I have ever seen. The music and imagery and quite effective at setting the mood. The special effects are lacking (1980 adaptation is better in this area). Overall, though, I think this is the best adaptation one can obtain.
