Secret Comics Japan: Underground Comics NowSecret Comics Japan: Underground Comics Now by Chikao Shiratori
Buy used from: $66.58
For fans of underground manga this volume, organized by a former editor at the famous indie manga magazine Garo, is a blessing. There are stellar contributions from diverse artists like Junko Mizuno, Kiriko Nananan, Usamaru Furuya, and a particularly excellent piece by Shintaro Kago. The stories range from bizarre post-atomic fantasy to surreal horror to dreamy idyll.

This is an excellent compilation of underground manga, with contributions by Hideshi Hino, Suehiro Maruo, Nekojiru, and others. As those names indicate, the slant here is toward gruesome horror and zany, irreverent drug fantasias. Overall, this is a "must-own" for fans of indie comics with strong stomachs, the only drawback being a somewhat sloppy localization.
Sake JockSake Jock
Buy used from: $49.66
Although it's less than 75 pages, and out of print, this slender volume is well worth picking up for fans of underground manga. It includes works by seven authors, ranging from raunchy, sophomoric sex humor to a hilariously Kafka-esque parable called "Kitty Court Drama" to dadaist nonsense (in a good way). There's also a typically restrained and lovely piece by Kiriko Nananan.
BlueBlue by Kiriko Nananan
Buy used from: $7.70
This beautifully understated manga depicts a bittersweet romance/friendship between two high school girls. Nananan's style is delicate and oblique, portraying character emotions with great nuance. A gentle eroticism permeates the book, the obscure tenderness of a touch, a word, a glance. Eschewing the melodramatic fireworks of most mainstream shoujo manga, Blue is a miniature masterpiece.
Manga DesignManga Design by Julius Wiedemann
Buy used from: $0.65
This huge tome from Taschen is an excellent introduction to the scope of artistic production in the manga format. It definitely opts for breadth over depth, however, packing in entries on 135 different manga artists, with just two and a half pages on each of them. Nevertheless, overall I know of no better introduction to manga in English.
Ultra-Gash InfernoUltra-Gash Inferno by Suehiro Maruo
Buy used from: $84.97
A collection of horrifying but uncannily beautiful stories by Suehiro Maruo. Maruo's extreme subject matter is balanced by a formal rigor more reminiscent of ukiyo-e than typical manga.
Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak ShowMr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show by Suehiro Maruo
Buy used from: $89.98
Another ghastly but austerely gorgeous work by Maruo, this one a book-length story.
The Push Man and Other StoriesThe Push Man and Other Stories by Yoshihiro Tatsumi
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $8.94
A collection of short, depressing, slice-of-life stories by the inventor of gekiga. Tatsumi's protagonists are all nearly interchangeable--depressed, nearly mute working class men who explode when they finally can't take it anymore.
Abandon the Old in TokyoAbandon the Old in Tokyo by Yoshihiro Tatsumi
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $9.97
Another volume of work by Tatsumi, this one focusing on longer works. He seems to have matured somewhat as an artist in this volume, with slightly more three-dimensional characters and more potent parables of the alienations of modern existence.
Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga, Vol. 1Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga, Vol. 1 by Koji Aihara
Buy new: $12.76 / Used from: $4.58
A hilarious "instructional manual" on how to draw manga, which is really a (barely disguised) parody of the cynical formulas that rule the money-hungry manga industry.
JAPAN AS VIEWED BY 17 CREATORSJAPAN AS VIEWED BY 17 CREATORS by Various Authors
Buy new: $25.00 / Used from: $13.95
An illustrated "tour" of Japan, by 17 artists, both French and Japanese. Although not story oriented, I enjoyed the quiet, almost Ozu-esque attention to landscape.
Uzumaki, Volume 1Uzumaki, Volume 1
Buy used from: $4.65
The absolute best horror manga ever! Not only is it really terrifying, but it's extremely high-concept and almost existential. I greatly prefer this to the work of Hideshi Hino.
Gyo, Volume 1Gyo, Volume 1 by Junji Ito
Buy used from: $6.95
Another book by Ito. Gyo is not nearly as scary as Uzumaki, but it's pretty hilarious and crazy. Bonus for the short stories at the end of volume 2.
Short Cuts, Volume 2 (Short Cuts Series)Short Cuts, Volume 2 (Short Cuts Series)
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $7.20
Short Cuts, which used to be serialized in Pulp Magazine (RIP), is an almost unclassifiable mash up of parodies of otaku culture. Sexy, hilarious, and unpredictable.
Pure TrancePure Trance by Junko Mizuno
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $11.10
Junko Mizuno combines gothic horror/fantasy with extremely cute heroines for a totally unique experience. Every Mizuno manga is immediately recognizable as hers.

Taiyo Matsumoto has an inimitable style, as he always draws free-hand and has been heavily influenced by French comic artists. All of his works are worth checking out, but especially this one.

Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.00
Panorama of HellPanorama of Hell by Hideshi Hino
Buy used from: $42.95
As I said, I'm not a huge fan of Hino, but if you're interested in his work then this is a good place to start. Panorama of Hell is so unrelentingly dark and disturbing that it actually goes past the realm of horror into the realm of comedy.
The Drifting Classroom Vol. 1 (Drifting Classroom)The Drifting Classroom Vol. 1 (Drifting Classroom) by Kazuo Umezu
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.98
I haven't been able to check this out yet, but Umezu is considered the grandaddy of horror manga, and was a huge influence on Junji Ito.
Dance Till Tomorrow, Vol. 1 (Pulp Graphic Novel)Dance Till Tomorrow, Vol. 1 (Pulp Graphic Novel)
Buy used from: $11.00
A light-hearted romantic comedy that deals with sex in a way that is neither prudish nor pornographic--a rare feat! Check this series out for a realistic, adult depiction of modern relationships.
Akira, Vol. 1Akira, Vol. 1 by Katsuhiro Otomo
Buy used from: $12.47
What can I say, except that it deserves its canonical status? The manga is every bit as impressive as the anime.
DomuDomu by Katsuhiro Otomo
A wonderful shorter work by Otomo, which deals with some of the same themes as Akira, but in a condensed form.
Blood of a Thousand (Blade of the Immortal, Book 1)Blood of a Thousand (Blade of the Immortal, Book 1) by Hiroaki Samura
Buy used from: $2.73
Samura's art is absolutely astounding. The series is running on a bit long for my taste, but the artwork never ceases to amaze.
Sexy Voice and Robo (Sexy Voice and Robo)Sexy Voice and Robo (Sexy Voice and Robo)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $3.85
Charming, unclassifiable work, featuring Kuroda's stunning brushwork. Sometimes incoherent, but never in a bad way.
Planetes, Book 1Planetes, Book 1 by Makoto Yukimura
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.02
Realistic series about the romance and tragedy of space travel. Very episodic but it managaes to be both mature and meditative, and at times funny and wistful.
Ghost In The Shell Volume 1 - 2nd EditionGhost In The Shell Volume 1 - 2nd Edition by Masamune Shirow
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $10.73
I hate hate hated volume 2--incredibly obscure and pretentious and full of pseudo-scientific jargon/babble--but the first one remains a classic.
Cromartie High School Volume 1 (Cromartie High School)Cromartie High School Volume 1 (Cromartie High School) by Eiji Nonaka
Buy new: $9.31 / Used from: $0.75
Nonaka's manga is pure brilliant dadaist hilarity. Although some of the more "Japanese" jokes were a bit over my head.
Gon: Introducing The Dinosaur That Time Will Never Forget! (Paradox Fiction)Gon: Introducing The Dinosaur That Time Will Never Forget! (Paradox Fiction) by Masashi Tanaka
Buy used from: $2.42
A classic with almost no dialogue. Highly abstract but entertaining nonetheless.
Between the SheetsBetween the Sheets by Erica Sakurazawa
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.85
A wonderful josei manga by Sakurazawa that deals with unrequited love in a touching way that eschews easy cliches. A welcome surprise!
Erica Sakurazawa: The Aromatic Bitters (Erica Sakurazawa)Erica Sakurazawa: The Aromatic Bitters (Erica Sakurazawa) by Erika Sakurazawa
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.85
Wasn't quite as fond of this as Between the Sheets, but still enjoyed it a lot. I don't recommend Angel, however, as it's somewhat sappy and less mature than these two.
Spirit of WonderSpirit of Wonder by Kenji Tsuruta
Buy used from: $9.98
The Walking ManThe Walking Man by Jiro Taniguchi

So zen!
Hotel Harbor View, Volume 1Hotel Harbor View, Volume 1 by Natsuo Sekikawa

Wonderful artwork.

A manga about the life of the famous Japanese novelist Natsume Soseki.
Doing TimeDoing Time by Kazuichi Hanawa

Nothing sensational, just a straightforward, realistic depiction of life in jail in Japan.
Buddha, Volume 1: Kapilavastu (Buddha)Buddha, Volume 1: Kapilavastu (Buddha) by Osamu Tezuka
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.99
Is any list of manga complete without a nod to Tezuka?
Mariko ParadeMariko Parade by Frederic Boilet
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.78
A self-reflexive "sequel" to the more austere, photo-realistic "Yukiko's Spinach," this manga depicts the end of a romance without the sentimentality of typical shoujo fare.
BLAME! Volume 1 (Blame (Graphic Novels))BLAME! Volume 1 (Blame (Graphic Novels))
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.00
The pinnacle of seinen manga, Blame! has very little dialogue or explanation, but oodles of atmosphere, amazing character design, and fabulous illustrations by Nihei (a former architect).
Antique Bakery, Vol. 1Antique Bakery, Vol. 1 by Fumi Yoshinaga
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $1.85
This short series is droll, sexy, and overall just incredibly charming. Recommended especially for foodies!
