Back yard make-believe in book form3
This popular group of books about fairies of every imaginable color, avocation, group and series of events is just right for girls beginning to read chapter books. The books all have the same format, plot, and conclusion, but it doesn't matter because the readers embue each character with backyard magic that only this age can provide. The stories go like this.

Two girls meet a fairy that has a problem. Usually something has been stolen that causes her to lose her power and she must have help getting it back. The girls are magically changed to the size of fairies (usually) and transported to fairyland where the problem occurs. Together the fairies and the girls figure out a way to restore the lost item and all is well until the next book. Girls from five to eight love these books. I call them book candy because girls gobble them up. They are just long enough and written well enough to hold girls' interest. This is transformative literature of an entirely different stripe: it provides the pleasure that girls get from playing fairies in the back yard...only in book form.
