Black Cat (2005) brings together a trio of unlikely characters in an off-beat sci-fi comedy-adventure. Train Heartnet, The Black Cat, uses his superhuman speed and marksmanship as an assassin for the sinister cabal Chronos. Sven Vollfied, a perennially broke "Sweeper" or bounty hunter, talks his way into and out of adventures. This improbable duo collides when Sven tries to rescue Train's next target: Eve, a little girl who's been turned into a killing machine through illicit nanotechnology. A mixture of naiveté and murderous transformations, she's another example of the deadly moppets in recent anime. The story initially focuses on Train and his decision to live his own life, rather than continue as a deadly puppet for Chronos. But the subplots proliferate, climaxing in a baroque scheme that pits Sven, Train, Eve, and their friends against a power-hungry gang armed with nanotechnology and Tao superpowers. Director Shin Itagaki uses fast cutting, unusual colors, and interesting camera angles skillfully: he keeps the story moving, even when it doesn't make sense. Like Lost Universe, Black Cat shifts jarringly in tone from comic to heartwarming to dramatic. Voice actors Brandon Potter and Jason Liebrecht make Sven and Train an appropriately quarrelsome pair of buddies, but their voices sound too old for the characters, who look much younger than the designs inKentaro Yabuki's original manga. The 24 episodes in this set could have easily fit on four discs. Rated TV PG, suitable for ages 14 and older: violence, violence against women, brief nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

If you like shonen anime...
If you are a red blooded male you will like this series. When I bought this set I was a little apprehensive because I had not heard anything about it. However, after the first couple of episodes, which build the storyline, this show starts to really pick up the pace, and it never slows down. If you have enjoyed series like Rurouni Kenshin and Outlaw Star then you'll love this, as it is, in my opinion a combination of the two at least with regard to the themes it has. For fans of shonen anime with epic battles and valuable lessons, the Black Cat box set is a must see.
Another Great Anime From Gozo&Funimation
I just got this a couple of days ago from SunCoast and have found myself to be astounded by this great series the plot you read from Amazon gives some info but more of the storyline is that Train Heartnet an assassin for the mysterious Chronos group who give him assignments to kill off anyone they see as an evil influence on the world than a Sweeper(Bounty Hunter for an easy description)by the name of Saya starts awakening his lost humanity and compassion this starts him questioning the missions that Chronos has him do.The final part is a job he has to do kill the bio-weapon EVE that they see as a threat to humanity but Train instead lets her live an decides to leave Chronos for good along the way he joins Sven Volfield another sweeper Sven who has also decided during one of his missions to protect Eve.There is of course more to the series but you will have to see that for yourself what I found intriguing is the concept
of the Chronos group that has them saying that to protect the world and give people the right to freedom and for good to stay strong that they must commit evil acts.I say this brings to mind many political and religious groups that have said the same thing and it seems a little hypocritical of these groups saying to battle evil or corruption we must use the same methods.I love how Funimation has once again found great voice actors as well as the great japanese voice actors the video format is widescreen and you have 5.1 english audio or 2.0 japanese audio the extras sadly aren't much you mostly just get trailers the series has comedic moments in it great action sequences and a great music track this series is perfect for any action anime fan
One of a kind!
Every once in a while a series will come along that will capture your attention so much that you will neglect food and sleep in order to devour the series. This is one of those anime's. This was one of those rare animes that I finished the same day I started it. Here is my usual rundown of the series.
Pros:
- The characters (specifically Train, Sven, and Eve) are all likable and bring their own strengths to the team. You will form a connection with each and every one.
- Almost every character in the series are dynamic and show some sort of character development.
- The characters all have minds of their own, even if they are part of an organization, they are not slaves of that organization. They will not blindly follow orders that goes against their beliefs, morals, and in many cases passions. This is a rare thing that separates this series from many others.
- Constantly keeps you guessing as to who the real "bad guys" are. Many time's individuals are just fighting for what they believe in. This makes it difficult to just categorize them as good and bad.
- Plenty of political intrigue with many different organizations including the Sweepers, Chronos, and the Apostles of the Star.
- Very similar and in my eyes surpasses Get Backers seasons 1 and 2
- Absolutely never devoid of intertwining plots and action.
- Cons
- After watching it in one day...I was tired the next
- Although there were a few casualties, many of the main characters were "invincible". This is very common throughout most anime's, but it lowers the suspense slightly.
Without a doubt one of the best series I've ever seen. If you have the funds, GET IT NOW. You will not regret it!
