Product Description

COME LOOK WITH ME: Enjoying Landscape Art with Children is the second volume in the COME LOOK WITH ME series of interactive art books from Lickle Publishing. Each book in the series introduces children to twelve magnificent works of art. More importantly, they offer a whole new way of encountering any work of art, one that engages the imagination as much as the eye.

Well suited for both individual and classroom use, Enjoying Landscape Art with Children pairs quality art reproductions with thought-provoking questions, encouraging children to learn through visual exploration and interaction. Thoughtful text introduces the world and work of the artist, making the most of a child’s natural curiosity.

Children are asked to imagine themselves in the depicted work of art: to feel the winter child of Pieter Bruegel’s Hunters in the Snow or be in the jungle stillness of Henri Rousseau’s The Repast of the Lion.

Drawing from a wide-ranging selection of 20th century works of art, children explore the artwork, invited to pantomime the boldly swirling brush strokes of Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night or cover a figure in the foreground of George Innes’s Lackawanna Valley and consider how the painting would look without it.

Engaging and interactive for both children and adults, Lickle Publishing’s COME LOOK WITH ME series celebrated what Mrs. Blizzard called the "pleasure of shared experience."

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
This is a wonderful book that will enrich any adult or child. Many children's books have lovely illustrations, but this one uses colorful and well-reproduced landscapes created by famous artists on one page, along with brief texts about the artist and picture on the next. Thoughtful questions are posed to help create awareness and understanding of a situation, and to help youngsters probe the paintings in-depth. This is an unusual book in that it can be enjoyed by the very young and their parents, or employed as an exceptional teaching tool by art teachers. Although the volume is slim, it can be experienced again and again. This will be a worthwhile addition to any public library.

About the Author
Gladys S. Blizzard The "Come Look with Me" series was created by Gladys S. Blizzard, whose experiences as an art teacher and work as a curator of education at Bayly Art Museum at the University of Virginia served as the basis for this educational style. Mrs. Blizzard's concept for sharing fine art with young people was inspired by her experiences with her own grandchildren. In her lifetime, she gave numerous workshops demonstrating her techniques and the series was included in the Getty Center for Education in the Arts summer seminar for art teachers.

Exploring Landscape Art With Children4
I am a docent at an art museum and the goal is to get children develop a love of art. This book is exactly what will assist a child to enjoy art.

great for art appreciation5
This is an easy way to teach art appreciation to children, even very young ones, and you can follow up with a trip to an art museum.

Two boys' review: Investigative looking and thinking5
You've heard the saying before but this book "helps art come alive." My two sons, ages 6 and 4, were enthralled by the artwork. The secret to this book is on the back page, where author Gladys Blizzard offers these simple, yet essential directions:

Look at all the paintings again.

Choose the one that has your favorite colors.
Choose the one that makes you feel happiest.
Choose the one that makes you feel most frightened.
Choose the one you would most like to hike in.
Choose the one you would most like to bike in.
Choose the one you would most like to live in.

On another day, do this again. What you see, think, and feel may be different.

And then keep looking!

This is our first experience with the "Come Look With Me" series of books. We fully intend to delve deeper and check out Come Look with Me: Enjoying Art with Children and Come Look With Me: Animals in Art.

As a final note, it was "Day and Night" by M.C. Escher and "The Oregon Trail" by Albert Bierstadt that interested my boys most.
