Nice Leather and Better Looking Than Kindle Cover but Not Perfect4
When I first bought my Kindle DX, I bought the standard issue Amazon Kindle DX Leather Cover (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX) and it has been very useful in most regards.

However, I decided I wanted to try the Platform Jacket because the Kindle DX could be set up for hands free reading. In addition, I liked the look of the M-Edge leather better and liked the different colors that were available.

Probably the most important question is which one does a better job protecting the Kindle? I would say it both covers provide comparable protection and neither one is significantly more or less secure than its competitor.

I also have to say that for looks and quality, I believe the M-Edge is a better cover. However, there are definitely things that could be improved to make this a five-star cover:

Advantages of the M-Edge Cover:
--------------------------------

1. Looks -- I love the color and texture of the leather. The leather reminds me of Dooney Bourke AWL purses.
2. Quality and feel of the leather
3. Ability to have the Kindle "support itself" without having to constantly hold it.

Disadvantages of the M-Edge Cover: (things that that Amazon Cover does better)
----------------------------------

1. The M-Edge strap is located right over port where the power supply would plug in so if you want to charge the Kindle, the cover has to be unstrapped and partially open to plug it in. The Amazon cover can be plugged in regardless of whether the cover is closed or open.
2. The cover doesn't fold back on itself as neatly as the Amazon Cover which has a softer spine designed to be bent back.
3. The strap that holds the Cover closed gets in the way when the cover is open for reading. It is stiff and doesn't fold backwards out of the way very comfortably.
4. The M-Edge cover for the DX doesn't use the hinge system to hold the cover in place and so the elastic straps required to secure the corners of the Kindle are not very "clean" looking. It seems secure enough but still would prefer the hinge locking mechanism.

In the end, I'll despite the disadvantages of the M-Edge, I'm keeping it and will use it because I really like the ability to stand the Kindle up by itself while reading. However, I hope really hope that someone comes out with a comparable quality cover that uses the actual hinge mechanism that Amazon has devises for the Kindle DX.

Excellent quality, practicallity and protection4
The first impression of this cover is that of a quality leather product and elegant simplicity of exterior design. It is matte black with tight white stitching. Water spills are easily wiped off without staining
The inside is of thin very soft gray suede.

It adds bulk to the Kindle DX which some may not like. On the other hand, this cover 's advantage lies in ability to vertically prop up your Kindle for hands free reading on a tabletop, or on your lap/ belly while in bed. When folded back easel-like and placed vertically, be mindful of the surface it's resting on. With smooth surfaces like glass or polished tile, its weight may make it unfold so that it flops down open; just place a heavier object directly behind it to support the cover from sliding open. On rougher surfaces or placed on your person in bed that's not a problem and the cover remains open. It's sturdy in this position and won't easily tip over.

I agree as others have commented that folding the cover over is not as easy lacking a hinge mechanism. I expect that, like with all leather products, a "break-in" period is needed to make it more supple. But when folded, the top cover does not rest flush with the back. The "spines" as you can see from the pictures align up leaving a small gap to the sides. Also, placing of the strap when opening the cover is annoying at times. Either you let it hang down, or tuck/fold it between the covers securely.

Note that the Kindle does not rest centered when secured inside. There's a ~3/4" (leather lined) space on the left, presumably to accommodate for a light gizmo. The right side is flush with the edge. This annoys me because I tend to hold it with my right hand, and having a little edge available on the right would be more comfortable. Also, some may find this asymmetrical look distracting.

Last, located in the inside of the top cover are 3 pockets: one large running the length of the cover, two small ones located at the bottom end. These are handy to keep a few sheets of paper or cards handy for jotting down notes and such. HOWEVER... if you pack them too much and they become bulky and bulge out, I can see how easily that can crack the screen when closed tightly.

Overall though, the advantages outweigh the annoyances I have most of which are minor. It's a good investment to protect your DX.
