From the Manufacturer
This complete 10-piece Mundial 5100 block set makes even beginner chefs feel like a pro. Chefs can peel all their small fruits and vegetables quickly and easily with the 2-1/2-inch peeling knife, while the 3-1/2-inch paring knife is perfect for small-scale cutting tasks. The set also includes a 6-inch serrated edge utility knife that's great for slicing foods such as tomatoes and small breads; an 8-inch chef's knife for chopping, dicing, and slicing any type or size of food; an 8-inch serrated bread knife that expertly slices soft and hard breads alike; and an 8-inch carving knife that smoothly cuts meats. Chefs will also appreciate the 4-inch straight-tined fork that assists during the carving process, along with the 10-inch sharpening steel that restores dulling blades to just-out-of-the-box condition. The set concludes with a pair of kitchen shears with take-apart blades for easy cleaning--worth their weight in gold to any chef--and a solid wood block that provides a safe, convenient place to store your knives. The attractive block also looks great on a kitchen counter.
For many chefs, nothing beats the ergonomic comfort or classic styling of fully forged cutlery in "basic black." Mundial's 5100 Series Black is just that. The company's oldest line of fully forged knives, it exemplifies all the expertise that Mundial has acquired through its more than 70 years of crafting gourmet cutlery. 5100 Series Black is fully forged from high-carbon stainless steel and features a durable polyacetal handle in the traditional three-rivet style.
The Value of a Fully-Forged Knife
Mundial knives, with very few exceptions, are fully forged in a manufacturing process that combines innovative technology with old-world tradition and expertise. In the forging process, steel is heated to an extremely high temperature, set into a die, and hammered into the shape of the basic blade. Following a heating and cooling process, the forged blade is ground to create a full taper to the cutting edge. The result is a stronger, thicker, more resilient blade that flares smoothly at the heel to blend into the shape of the handle. Fully forged cutlery offers an array of key benefits, including greater tensile strength, increased durability, lasting sharpness, and better balance and control.
Construction
Mundial's computer-aided design creates the perfect shape and balance for chopping, dicing, and slicing all types of food. The knives are fully forged from high-carbon chrome molybdenum stainless steel for the best edge retention and sharpening ease. Each knife also undergoes Mundial's computerized blade grinding and polishing process to create a precise taper from tip to bolster (the quality bolster is the main feature of any truly forged knife). Busy chefs will appreciate the ergonomically crafted handles with full tangs, which deliver comfort, balance, and durability. Every Mundial knife is also hand sharpened and individually tested for ultimate performance.
Quality Control
How do Mundial knives compare to other premium cutlery? In addition to its extensive quality control procedures, Mundial regularly submits its products to an international independent testing facility. These standardized testing methodologies continue to show that Mundial knives are among the best in the world.
Customer Reviews
Great knives for half the price of the competition
I was contemplating spending almost double the price paid for this cutlery on a similar Wusthof or Henckels 10 piece set. After receiving the knives I am glad I did not. These knives are of excellent quality and sharpness. After researching this product I expect exceptional durability of the edge. I can see no difference in the quality of this set compared to the other premium branded knives. I believe the only difference is that the other brands are more well recognized by the "Williams-Sonoma" home chef and as such command more market price. The maker of these knives originated from Germany then moved to Brazil, so you are still getting the manufacturing quality associated with that region. I have big hands, this particular line, while comfortable, could have a slightly larger handle if you are of similar size. Smaller to average-large hands should adjust to the handle contours well.
Sharp and Sturdy
After researching many brands of knives, I decided on the Mundial brand. I was a bit nervouse because I couldn't find any locally to look at. From the first time that I used the chef's knife, I knew that I would love these. They are very well balanced and I like the weight of them. They cut easily through everything from chicken to tender tomatoes.
We are very pleased with Mundial knives. I would recommend them to anybody and would purchase them again in the future.
Economical serviceable knife set
We have two sets of these knives, in red and white, for our kosher kitchen. Obviously, for this midrange price, they aren't premium knives, but they are attractive, sturdy (full tang) and reasonably well balanced, with a large assortment of sizes and types and a pair of handy shears. The knife block is well designed and impervious to water and dirt. Invest in a knife sharpener: the knives do lose their edge easily, but sharpen up quickly. Above all, heed the no dishwasher warning - the coating of the handle will chip off if the knives are put in the dishwasher repeatedly. If well cared for, they will probably last a long time. Not really recommended for serious cooking, but an excellent choice for an average home kitchen.
