Nice Overview of Sousa's Alternative Works, Weak Marches
This is an enjoyable collection for Sousa fans who would like to hear a sampling of his works apart from the marches he is best known for. I personally found the "Tally Ho!" Overture, "Last Days of Pompeii," and the "El Capitan" Waltz the most beautiful pieces in this compilation.
Pleasing as these pieces are, none compare to John Philip Sousa's specialty. His marches have a charismatic aura all their own, and would overshadow his finest symphony with ease. There are few things in this world as vivacious and optimistic as a Sousa March.
As for the Marches on this compilation, they are not so hot. All are excellent Sousa compositions, but with the exception of "Wolverine," The USAF Heritage of America Band delivers weak renditions of Sousa's work. Particularly hard on the ears is the take on "Jack Tar," with the timid "Sailor's Waltz" portion followed with a whistle that sounds more like a banshee. If you want quality Sousa Marches, look elsewhere!
