![]() | Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides: Milhaud; De Boeck...
Buy used from: $39.98 Though they are hard to find, the Belgian Guides recordings are some of the best available. This is a great one, and another to watch out for is "Nuts." "Jericho" and "Festival Variations" are insanely great on that recording.

![]() | Holidays & Epiphanies
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $5.79 All of the DWS recordings are solid and worth seeking out. I chose this one because it is probably the best representation of Ron Nelson's music. The recording is bright and shimmering, and the band plays with the enthusiasm the music demands.

![]() | Mozart: Serenades for Wind Ensemble
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $12.70 The Gran Partita is one of the first important works for winds, and the Berlin Orchestra winds tackle it brilliantly. It induces chills with its vibrant textures and virtuoso playing.

![]() | Lord of the Rings & Firebird Suite
Buy new: $14.99 Though not the cleanest recording of either piece, spirited interpretations of both. The LOTR symphony has become a staple of the literature, and the ideal recording to seek out is the Danish Concert Band from 1995 (paired with Bernstein's "Divertimento"). If you cannot locate that version, this one is fine.

![]() | Metropolis
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $8.28 This was very difficult to find when it first came out on the relatively obscure Serendipity label. It has since been reissued by Klavier, making it more readily available. The recording is much leaner and rawer than more recent RNCM recordings that seem comparatively watered down. All of the pieces are modern classsics, led by Ellerby's charming "Paris Sketches." A real gem.

![]() | Wildflowers
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $9.42 While many of the Klavier/Corporon series recordings feel sterile because of their over-engineering (especially the UNT band), this one is pure genius. You will not find a more perfect realized sound of the Schwantner. Every piece is worth hearing multiple times. This is one of the best of the series.

![]() | Postcards
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $12.19 The other Klavier/Corporon recording I highly recommend is this one, made toward the end of Corporon's run at CCM. I love the passion and energy of the playing. Even a few bumps and bruises are left in! Get it for the unbelievably difficuly and delightful "Terpsichore," but also for the gems "Suite Francaise" and "Passacaglia." The whole recording is masterful.

![]() | Eastman Wind Ensemble Plays Husa, Copland, Vaughan Williams, Hindemith by Ralph Vaughan Williams
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $8.48 This is one the budget choices on the list and worth every penny. All of the pieces are essentials in any wind band library. "Music for Prague" is difficult to capture in a recording, but Hunsberger and EWE do it as much justice as any CD out there. And Wynton Marsalis' tone is smooth and sweet on "Quiet City," blending seamlessly with the English horn. A classy CD.

![]() | David Maslanka: Mass
Buy new: $36.98 / Used from: $15.99 Maslanka's Mass is one of the most challenging of all wind works. That is probably why it is seldom performed. And that is one of the reasons you owe it to yourself to hear it. The Arizona ensembles are game, and it is an admirable if imperfect effort. The sheer power of the music is startling. There are and more accessible recordings available. But this work deserves more understanding.

![]() | Redline Tango
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.95 I wanted to choose one from the Naxos series because I am ecstatic that a major label has chosen to start a series for band music. This is good representative, and it includes new and notable music performed by an accomplished ensembles. And you cannot beat the price. Thanks, Naxos!
