Customer Reviews
A classic in Metal History.
Twenty-five years ago a long-haired, metal-loving friend and played a song "I just had to hear." That song was Metal on Metal. We loved it, we played it a lot, it became iconic, a classic. After having seen the fantastically charming Anvil documentary I felt a little bit guilty. I mean, I never bought an Anvil album - I borrowed my friends tape and made myself a tape from it. I listened to it for years! But I never paid a dime. So now I make my first Anvil purchase via streaming ones-and-zeroes. Guys, in a very small way I am paying my debt of gratitude. Thanks Anvil.
Discover the band you should have discovered a long time ago
I'm 37, and a metal head from way back in the 2nd grade. Last night I watched the documentary "The Story of Anvil," and was blown away. I won't review the film here, but will say that I dreamed about it all night. Today, I am listening to Anvil for the first time through this anthology, and am just blown away. The power of this band, the PUSH inherent in every song, regardless of the sound quality of some of the recordings during their leaner years, is just tremendous. They were leaders in speed metal before speed metal came to the fore, and yet the whimsy and lyrical wink of the lyrics throughout their career harkens to older 70's metal, and (thanks to Jack Black) sounds as fresh today as ever. I am looking forward to exploring this band. They just make me happy.
Better late than never
I, like many other metalheads, discovered ANVIL, thanks to their documentary. I never heard this band before, but then I saw the doc, and the next day, I bought their "This is Thirteen" album. Slowly but surely, my love for this band's music was growing, until I saw the "50 for $5" sale here at amazon, and in that sale, the ANTHOLOGY OF ANVIL was included. I thought: "17 songs for $5? Not a bad deal", so I bought the digital album. Man, am I glad I bought it.
Actually, someone took their time to compile the best songs of every Anvil album, and included it in this anthology. Whoever that person was, THANK YOU. All songs are excellent, and make you headband from start to finish. After you listen to this album, you still wonder why did this band never got the recognition they deserve. I just hope I can see them live someday, to thank them for their dedication, and for never giving up.
