![]() | Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $0.01 For some reason, I could relate to this. I'm not bipolar, but it also talks about the issues of being lost as a teenage girl. This book was comforting to me - that other people felt the same pain as I did, even if they were in completely different situations. Susanna Kaysen is fantastic.

![]() | The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides
Buy new: $11.19 / Used from: $0.25 Another great book about being a teenager. So haunting. I don't think the movie did it justice. Read the book. Definitely.

![]() | Anna Begins by Jennifer Davenport
Buy new: $16.46 / Used from: $2.69 A great book and a short read. My So-Called Life-like story telling - nothing truly fantastic happens. Characters never have any spectacular revalations, but it's *real*. I totally fell in love with Scott.

![]() | Lying: A Metaphorical Memoir by Lauren Slater
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $3.75 One of my favorite books about being a teenager, mother-daughter relationships, and writing in general. We're all lying about something. In the end, it's a metaphor for something that's very real to us. Lauren Slater is a genius.

![]() | The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $5.50 There's not mistaking that Sylvia Plath is a landmark in women's voices and an inspiration for anyone's interior monologue - whether they're writing, or just living. A must-read.

![]() | The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Buy new: $11.19 / Used from: $4.24 The most classic for-teens-but-not-for-teens book. A story about teenagers that should be read by everyone, young or old. This book gets better and better the more times you read it and the older you get. If you haven't read it already, you MUST.

![]() | Slapstick: Or Lonesome No More! by Kurt Vonnegut
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $5.03 OK, chalk this up to metaphor. Kurt Vonnegut is a major inspiration for my writing style. Slapstick is one of the most beautiful of his works, and my personal favorite. It's painfully romantic as only Kurt Vonnegut could be.
