Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
When is a clock not just a clock? When it provides so much more than just the time: temperature, phase of the moon, and accuracy within one second per year, for example. This handsome wall clock, with its dual LCD screens and black-accented oak finish, is an example of household life being enhanced by science. The WS-8117U can hang on the wall or stand freely, with a built-in, fold-out stand. Radio-controlled time (to the hour, minute, and second) and date are prominently displayed, along with indoor and outdoor temperatures measured in either Fahrenheit or Celsius. The day of the week can be displayed in English, French, Spanish or German.

Time can be displayed in 12- or 24-hour modes, and time zones from Greenwich Mean Time to -12 GMT can be selected, with three-letter identifications for US time zones. An alarm feature is useful as a timer, and, if the clock happens to hang or stand near a bed (or a couch that's used for napping), a snooze feature allows for gradual wake-up. Moon phase shows in twelve increments, from new moon, through gibbous and crescent phases (waxing and waning), to quarter and finally full moon.

The clock comes with La Crosse transmitter TX37U-IT. Clock and transmitter each operate on two AA batteries. For options in wall mounting, three screws and screw anchors and a strong adhesive tape are included. The WS-8117U measures 12-1/4 by 8 by 1-1/4 inches. La Crosse provides a one-year limited warranty on its clocks. Each clock comes with a thoroughly detailed instruction booklet. --Garland Withers

Customer Reviews

Return policy1
The clock doesn't synchronize the time due to its defective outside temperature remote. I called the manufacturer, LaCrosse Technology, and I was told that a defective remote will prevent the clock to function via radio. I find it very annoying that the company does not refund shipping charges on defective items. They charged me $7.40 for shipping me the clock and I had to pay $8.20 for UPS Ground for sending the clock back. The total shipping was $15.60 which is 43% of the price of the clock ($36). Their shipping policy also discourages anyone from getting a replacement for a defective item, because if something goes wrong again, you may exceed the price of the purchased item just in shipping charges.

Poor Display; Hard to Set Up; No Customer Service2
I regret buying this clock because it is just unreadable, unless you are standing very close to it, and in bright light. Forget about reading it in medium to low light or in the dark -- the black letters disappear into the medium gray background. I posted a picture on this site to show you how the clock looks midday, next to my bay window with lots of light shining on it -- see how hard it is to read?

It was also hard to set up because the instructions were inadequate. I called La Crosse customer service for help, but only got a voice mailbox to leave a message on, and no one called me back.

Thank goodness I now know what the REAL time is!!!!5
I was so frustrated because every clock in my house said a differesnt time. My husband always set his watch by WWV. He's gone. What do I do? Aha! An Atomic Clock will be just "the ticket". I searched and searched. Stores! Go to Google you dimwit! Yahoo! There it was. A beautiful wood clock that gave me the perfect time. And it was fairly simple (for someone who is "electronically challenged") to set up. Now I am a "Happy Camper." Thank You !
