The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition)The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition)
Buy used from: $46.99
One of my favorite stories put together by a person who loved and respected the material.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2-Disc Collector's Edition)Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $6.89
Beautiful story, beautiful woman, and not conventional.
Gosford ParkGosford Park
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.45
A mystery movie that would have been right at home in Bogart's age.
Interstate 60Interstate 60
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.97
A quirky off-beat road movie.
Pirates of the Caribbean CollectionPirates of the Caribbean Collection
Buy used from: $39.79
The second best trilogy of the decade. Tons of fun.
Casino Royale (2-Disc Widescreen Edition)Casino Royale (2-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $3.99 / Used from: $2.13
Best first movie of any James Bond. A few more this good, he'll be even better than Connery.
ScorchedScorched
Buy used from: $1.70
Cute off-beat caper movie with 2 actresses I adore.
After the Sunset (Widescreen New Line Platinum Series)After the Sunset (Widescreen New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $0.01
Salma Hayek, Pierce Brosnan and Woody Harrelson star in a movie that hints, (at times), at being a re-make/modernization of Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief. It's a movie that fully understands that it's role in society is merely to entertain people, not teach it lessons.
Music and Lyrics (Widescreen Edition)Music and Lyrics (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $1.05
A romcom men and women can enjoy.
The HolidayThe Holiday
Buy new: $3.99 / Used from: $2.99
Cameron reigns in her stupidity just enough while Kate is being her mesmerizingly gorgeous self in a pretty damn cute story.
Stranger Than FictionStranger Than Fiction
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $0.99
Also getting control of stupidity, Will Ferrett actually finds humor that doesn't create unintended labotomies on the audience. It's a major step forward in his development, no matter how temporary it may prove.
Remember the Titans (Widescreen Edition)Remember the Titans (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.94
Quite possibly the best sports movie so far this century.
50 First Dates (Widescreen Special Edition)50 First Dates (Widescreen Special Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $0.27
Drew manages to bring out the best in Adam.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (Widescreen Edition)How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (Widescreen Edition)
Buy used from: $1.44
Because the list needs Goldie's little girl.
Fool's Gold (Widescreen Edition)Fool's Gold (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.59
A movie with a little bit of everything that actually works. Romance, adventure, comedy and fun. Not quite up to the standards of Romancing the Stone, but very few others can top it.
Bride WarsBride Wars
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.99
Cute comedy with Kate looking cute, but playing bitchy, and Anne looking drop dead gorgeous and playing adorable. At times, Anne looks so fantastic, that Kate is practically invisible on screen, (something even the beautiful Sophie Marceau couldn't achieve.)
Get Smart (Two-Disc Special Edition)Get Smart (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $2.02
A wonderful movie adaptation of the old TV show, Steve is perfect as Max, and Anne is stunning as 99. Plus, it's great that she's finally not in a chick flick.
The House BunnyThe House Bunny
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.96
The Anna Farris vehicle where she plays a bunny thrown out of the Playboy mansion, and becomes house mother to the sorriest sorority on campus. Nice performances from the totally irresistible Emma Stone, a surprisingly cute Rumer Willis, another famous actor's kid, and Katherine McPhee.
Scary MovieScary Movie
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $0.90
The list also needs a spoof, and this may be one of the best ever made. It's on a par with Airplane.
Not Another Teen Movie (Unrated Director's Cut)Not Another Teen Movie (Unrated Director's Cut)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.84
This did for the teen genre what Scary Movie did for horror.
Blonde & Blonder (Widescreen Edition)Blonde & Blonder (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $0.01
A surprisingly cute movie. It was the first time I saw Denise Richards being funny in a movie on purpose, (her stint as a Bond Girl wasn't intentional comedy.) The plot does loosely resemble an '80s cheese-fest called Attack of the Killer Bimbos, but this was far more charming.
Cast Away (Widescreen Edition)Cast Away (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.06
Despite the absolutely shameless product placement, this is a fantastic story. And there's no truth to the rumor that Pauly Shore tried out for the part of Wilson, but was rejected.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Single Disc)Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Single Disc)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $1.98
A continuation of the Indiana Jones saga, set in the 50s during the height of the Red Menace scare.
Disturbia (Widescreen Edition)Disturbia (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $1.00
A modernization of Rear Window, with a little cutie, Sarah Roemer, who is part Jessica Beil, part Amy Smart. And that little Shia boy seems like a half way decent actor.
The Others (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)The Others (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $1.43
Phenomenal acting and atmosphere. A film that works perfectly well when watched a second time, knowing the twist.
Prom Night (Unrated)Prom Night (Unrated)
Buy new: $5.49 / Used from: $0.86
Infinitely superior to the Jamie Lee Curtis movie of the same name, and arguably the best horror/suspence/thriller movie so far in the new century. It's a very well done, multi-layered movie with a well thought out plot.
The Ring (Widescreen Edition)The Ring (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $0.01
A Japanese horror story done in Hollywood in a way that the audience might actually like, unlike the Grudge.
The UninvitedThe Uninvited
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.09
A very good psychological thriller. While I was expecting a twist, I have to admit to not seeing that particular twist, so good on the directors for misdirection. Apparently based on Korean horror classic A Tale of Two Sisters.
Trick 'r TreatTrick 'r Treat
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.44
A fun little Halloween movie that isn't supposed to be taken seriously, even if it does touch on the historical background of the holiday itself.
I Heart HuckabeesI Heart Huckabees
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.22
An existential comedy with good off-beat performances from Dustin Hoffman, Lilly Tomlin, Naomi Watts, Jason Schwatzman, and Markey Mark.
EulogyEulogy
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.44
A mildly dark comedy of a highly dysfunctional family that comes together for the funeral of their patriarch. Zooey Deschanel is incredibly endearing as the only sane one, and the rest of the characters all had a fun, quirky edge to them.
The Good GirlThe Good Girl
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $0.45
One of the few Jennifer Anniston movies that isn't an assault of estrogen overload, it also has good performances by John C. Rielly, Zooey Daschanel, and Maggie G's little brother.
The Bucket ListThe Bucket List
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $1.95
Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman in a story about 2 men in a hospital with cancer that are both told they have less than a year to live. They make out a list of things to do before they die, and since Jack has an unlimited supply of money, they do what's on the list.
Atonement (Widescreen Edition)Atonement (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $1.75
Beautifully done movie about the recollections of the younger years of an old dying writer. Keira is lovely and Romola looks kind of cute too.
Hamlet 2Hamlet 2
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $2.61
Funny and irreverent. Failed actor/ineffective high school drama teacher decides to make a sequel to Hamlet that stars a time machine and a modern day Jesus-as-a-heartthrob.
MoliereMoliere
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $7.93
Treats the two year hole in Moliere's biography as if it were one of his plays. Extremely well done.
