Pompeii
A great deal of our modern understanding of the ancient Romans comes from the archaeological evidence excavated at Pompeii and Herculaneum, in combination with accounts from historical and literary texts. After the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, these two cities on the Bay of Naples were buried. Rediscovered in the 18th century, these two ancient cities continue to fascinate archaeologists, scientists and Classicists.
