Amazon.com Product Description

Seventh Generation 2X Laundry Concentrate is tough on dirt but gentle on your clothes and the environment. This non-toxic, biodegradable, and phosphate-free laundry concentrate is specially formulated for high-efficiency and standard machines and features a naturally derived and gentle blue eucalyptus and lavender scent.

Completely Natural Cleaning Power for Your Clothes
Seventh Generation 2X Laundry Concentrate is tough on dirt and stains, while being completely free of phosphates, optical brighteners, bleach and other ingredients that are harmful for your and your environment. This concentrate is made from a low-foaming blend of naturally derived cleaning agents (coconut-derived surfactants, glycerin), natural water softeners, alkalinity builders, and anti-redeposition agents (sodium citrate, borax), non-animal-derived enzymes to remove protein and starch stains and protect fabrics, plant-derived anti-foaming agents (glycerol monooleate, oleic acid), and cleaning enhancers (calcium chloride).

Non-toxic, hypo-allergenic, biodegradable, and Kosher-certified, Seventh Generation 2X Laundry Concentrate is completely phosphate- and dye-free, is safe for septic and greywater systems, and has never been tested on animals.

What's Wrong with Phosphates and Optical Brighteners
Phosphates are natural minerals that, when used in detergents, can reduce water hardness, which allows the detergent's soap to clean more effectively, and prevent dirt from being redeposited back onto the items being cleaned. However, once the phosphates are released back into the environment via household wastewater, the results can be disastrous to the environment.

Phosphates encourage algae growth, which directly leads to a decrease in the oxygen supply in water ways--a situation that can ultimately leads to the deaths of living organisms, and eventually the entire waterway.

Similarly, optical brighteners have long been used to clean our laundry. They help mask any yellowing that may be present in the treated material and makes the material seem brighter and whiter than it would otherwise naturally appear to the eye by creating an enhanced "whiter-than-white" surface that doesn't get clothes any cleaner but simply makes them look that way.

Many of the chemicals in optical brighteners, however, are toxic to fish and other aquatic life, are slow to degrade, and can cause mutations in bacteria. And in terms of human health, exposure to optical brighteners, which remain on laundry by design, can cause eye irritations and skin reactions in sensitive individuals.

Why Clean Naturally?
Unlike many conventional laundry concentrates detergents, the Seventh Generation 2X Laundry Concentrate does not create unpleasant fumes, will not leave harmful residues, and is safer for the environment. Plant-derived cleaners are made from renewable resources rather than from petroleum. Studies show that making household cleaners from plant-derived materials uses less energy than making the same cleaners from petroleum. Using less energy helps reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

If every household in the U.S. replaced just one bottle of 50-ounce 2X petroleum-based liquid laundry detergent with the Seventh Generation 2X Laundry Concentrate, we could save 233,000 barrels of oil, enough to heat and cool 13,400 U.S. homes for a year! Additionally, thousands of tons of phosphates and other harmful chemicals will be removed from our ecosystem.

Also, concentrated laundry detergents come with great environmental benefits. Each bottle of 2X concentrated detergent is half the size of a bottle of regular laundry detergent and washes the same number of loads. In addition to requiring less fuel to ship the detergent to you, the entire manufacturing process is more efficient--using less water, less packaging, and less fuel.

The Right (Natural) Fragrance for your Home
Our sense of smell is powerful and evocative. Experiencing a scent unfold can transform our mood, transport us to distant places, or connect us through a shared experience. When you use natural cleaners, not only do you care for the health of the environment, you also care for the health of the people in your home. The scents in Seventh Generation household cleaners are created from whole and natural plant essences, and let you clean without harsh or unpleasant chemicals and odors.

Blue Eucalyptus and Lavender is a gentle scent that infuses a sense of energy and accomplishment--leaving your clothes smelling purely clean. It is made with a blend of eucalyptus, lavender, and pine whole plant essences.

About Seventh Generation
Seventh Generation offers a complete line of natural household products designed to work as well as their traditional counterparts, but use renewable, non-toxic, phosphate-free, and biodegradable ingredients as often as possible, and are never tested on animals. Seventh Generation products are healthy and safe for the air, the surfaces, the pets, and the people in your home--and for the environment outside of it. Every time you use Seventh Generation products you make a difference by saving natural resources, keeping toxic chemicals out of the environment, and making the world a safer place for this and the next seven generations.

Works Great. I will buy it again!5
I was surprised to see the the super negative comments over a laundry detergent. So, I decided to speak up and let you guys know what I see.

I have a front loader machine that uses HE soap. I am looking at my early empty HE CHEER bottle at this moment. Absolutely NO specific ingredients at all. It states in one line on the back of the bottle "Includes biodegradable surfactants (anionic and nonionic) and enzymes." I mention this because some reviewers are upset about the label on the 7th Generation bottle. Let's now look at that one...

First off, the bottle of 2X 7th Gen is 1/3 the size and so the label area is considerable smaller. The larger CHEER bottle did not bother to tell us what things are inside but the little 7th Gen. bottle took the time to inform us consumers. It is NOT difficult to get to. Turn the bottle over, look at the back of it. The lower left side has an arrow and states to PEEL BACK LABEL, which it peels quite easily. It has a nice, easy to read list of ingredients for you to scrutinize over; feel free to Google away.

The concern over the "sodium laureth sulfate" should be researched if you are concerned that you are going to eat the soap. The ingredient is used to make the bubbles. The warnings I found for this ingredient were ALL for ingesting or long exposure from cosmetics and shampoos. I saw no warnings if used in laundry detergent and even if used in shampoo, there is no evidence to support that the trace amount will harm you. There are warning to discontinue using toothpastes that contain it as...you may be ingesting the substance and the last I checked... it is not wise to ingest ANY toothpastes or soaps for that matter.

The label is clear on how to use the product; it is easy to read and large enough print to read without strain. They pack a lot of data on the little bottle compared to the 100fl oz bottle of CHEER I have sitting next to it.

I have washed all colors and different degrees of dirtiness...not yet have I seen any tainting of colors or dirt left behind! I chose the Free & Clear as I am sensitive to some smells.

At this point in time I have to wonder what is going on with the other users?? It may be something in their water is reacting to the ingredients? Water Temperature? Mixed colors in the same load and did not notice that one would fade? Maybe someone added bleach to that load???

There are lots of reason a product may not work. I really do not understand all the low ratings and comments as I have not seen anything that they are. I wash everything on Cold water with the exception of whites but I think I will give that a try too and see if there really is a difference using hot or cold water. Maybe that is another myth I have been clinging too. I will give it test next load of white socks with the 7th Generation here and see what happens!

I am very pleased with the product. If I remember I will let you know what happens with the soap, no bleach, cold water, and dirty whites.

6/11/2009 update here!

Have been washing multi-colored loads now just to test this soap out! I am pleased to inform that not one...not one color is fading, there are no weird spots showing up and my whites are still white!

With washing the load of dirty white socks in cold with only this detergent, I find the whites are still white. The really dirty heel of the sock that was stained for months already is still "dingy" but what can we expect? That is why they make additive to remove ground in dirt.

So conclusion:

This product works. Colors are still bright. Whites are still white. No spotting or staining and I have been TRYING to get things to bleed. I do not see what the others are doing to get such horrid results in their wash. I am the average person with a dog and cat outside. I have horses and my jeans get nasty at the bottom of the legs. I spill juices and food on my shirts and still... they come out clean! I even used it today as a pre-treatment to a blood stain from 2 days ago. Came out clean clean clean!

I like the smaller bottles for storage and for use. I like the dye free and smell free quality. I like that it takes a VERY LITTLE to wash my clothes AND it cleans my stuff.

Hope this helps with your decision to try or not to try.

Best wishes.

Great HE Laundry Detergent for the Chemically Sensitive, the Environmentally Conscious, and Those Who Love Clean Clothes5

This is Seventh Generation's newest laundry detergent, made for high efficiency washers. It works well in standard washers as well, though, and you don't have to lug around all of the extra weight due to added water.

I have tried both the Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender scent and the White Flower & Bergamot Citrus Scent. I love both, but especially the White Flower & Bergamot Citrus, but I think that the Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender will be more popular. I have seen reviews in which many people dislike the bergamot scent...it is very bergamot-y, so if you're not sure you'd like that, I'd go with the more conventional eucalyptus-lavender scent. Both work equally well in getting your clothes clean!

The 32 ounce bottle size is perfect, lasts a long time, for an HE washer 32 loads and for a standard washer, about 21 loads.

This product is free of dyes and scented with essential oils and botanical extracts! That is one of my favorite features---goodbye to nasty, fake, chemical smells; hello to subtly scented clean clothes!

The detergent is non-toxic, biodegradable, contains no optical brighteners or petroleum-based cleaners or phosphates. It is safe for septic tanks and gray water systems. It fights stains with non-animal-derived enzymes. It leaves no residues that could irritate sensitive skin. It works in water at temperatures from 45 degrees to 145 degrees Fahrenheit.

The amount of suds this detergent produces is very low (just be aware), but it works GREAT!

I love this stuff!!5
I have four kids and have been using this detergent for over a year now in our front loader machine. It is ultra concentrated and with a front loader, the label says to 1/3 less of it, so it goes a long way. I absolutely love this product! As a matter of fact, it gets stains out so well that I now use it to pretreat stains. I filled a squirt bottle with half detergent and half water, shook it up and spray it on the stains about ten minutes before I throw the clothes into the washer. I have never had a problem with this liquid harming my colors. There is no bleach in this product as there is in the powdered detergent, so I cannot see why one other reviewer has had problems. I use it with the baby's clothes, darks, whites, and colors and have never had a problem with it discoloring clothes and I would definately know that if I pretreat stains with it. Our clothes come out so clean, and I know that I am keeping my kids safe without using chemicals. Thank you Seventh Generation!!
