Album Description
A soulful, eclectic collection of chants and songs, chosen for their capacity to inspire and uplift. Beautiful vocals, combined with lush instrumental backgrounds including piano, harp, guitar, hand drums and choral vocals. Co-producer and arranger Russell Walden contributes keyboard and piano tracks, as well as harmony vocals on many of the songs. Eddie Daniels, internationally known clarinetist, is a guest artist on the track "Only Make Believe". In addition, a host of gifted Santa Fe musicians (including Shaina's husband, Richard) contribute instrumentals and back-up vocals. Lyrics include:
--"...In this time when the Earth is waking to the dawn of another age, I tell you now, there is no reason to be afraid..."
--"God of Beauty is now reigning in the temple of my heart..."
--"Where I sit is holy, holy is the ground, forest, mountain, river, listen to the sound...Great Spirit circles all around me..."
--"It's in everyone of us, to be wise, find your heart, open up both your eyes...we can all know everything, without ever knowing why, it's in everyone of us, by and by..."
--"On a clear day, rise and look around you, and you'll see who you are...on a clear day, how it will astound you, that the glow of your being outshines every star..."
Lloyd Barde, Backroads Music
After reaching the hearts of many listeners with "Songs For The Inner Child", Shaina Noll returns with a sensitive, joyous and reverent collection of songs on her superb second album, Bread For The Journey. Just as each of these songs has touched her deeply, they will easily become "food for your soul" as well.
Included are songs by Kate Wolf, Hoyt Axton, Cindy Mangsen, David Pomeranz (It's In Everyone of Us) and musical partner and co-producer for this project, Russell Walden.
There are also well-known chants like "Listen, Listen, Listen" and "God of Beauty". Sensitive instrumentation, especially from Walden's piano and keyboards, and a host of harmony vocalists tie it together perfectly.
Built in love, recorded with a gentle touch, a gift for all who listen.
From the Artist
I began work on Bread For The Journey about a year after the release of my first album, Songs For The Inner Child in 1992. I met my partner on the project, Russell Walden, when our children were at the same school. Russell, his wife Natalie (one of the back-up singers on the track "Songlines") and I had joined together to do a benefit concert for the school. During the course of rehearsing for the concert, I had the opportunity to observe Russell's multi-talents as arranger, pianist and vocalist. I was particularly taken with how beautifully his voice blended with mine. Soon after we finished the concert, I invited him to help me create my second album.
I had been collecting songs that had touched me deeply, some of them songs I had been carrying in my heart for many years. As Russell and I began to work on creating accompaniments for the songs, the vision for the album emerged: a sort of buffet of "soul food".
The songs I chose for this collection affirm the presence of the divine in all things, my love of the Earth, my deep appreciation of that which is magical and mysterious in this world, the preciousness of finding humor in the bittersweet experiences of life. A somewhat eclectic group of songs, (I'm an eclectic kind of girl, by nature...) they were put in a specific sequence to give you a journey-like experience as you listen.
The process of creating the album gave me the opportunity to collaborate with a fabulous group of musicians, all of whom brought their unique gifts to the songs. Some of them were friends of mine before the project began; all were friends by the time we finished.
As with my Songs For The Inner Child, I've been touched and gratified by the letters and phone calls I've received from people who have been moved by Bread For The Journey. I've heard that it appeals to adults of all ages, as well as children, making it the kind of collection that families can enjoy together. I've heard from clergy of many denominations who use the songs as a source of inspiration in their services and retreats. In addition, the songs have been played by hospice and hospital workers as a source of comfort for the sick and dying.
It continues to be my great pleasure to offer music that can touch the heart and feed the soul. If you're moved to give Bread For The Journey a listen, I hope you'll find something in the collection to nourish and inspire you, whatever your journey may be.
Customer Reviews
Shaina's second CD is richer, fuller, deeper
As a long time fan of "Songs for the Inner Child," I was eager to hear her second release, "Bread for the Journey." The moods on this CD are much more diverse, ranging from the very powerful and soothing "Brother Warrior" to some very playful, upbeat songs. (It did take me a little adjusting, as the mood on her first CD is more single note.) My most surprising favorite is "On a Clear Day." This is a song I had heard many times, but never actually listened to! Shaina's version carries so beautifully the energy and message of this song: On a clear day...you can see who you really are. The produciton values here are much improved, and for me this increase in professional sound quality only adds to the synchrony of Shaina's lovely voice and the heart-felt songs.
Some of the most uplifting and inspiring music you'll ever hear
On her second release, Shaina Noll has compiled ten beautiful, inspiring and uplifting songs, which she performs with sincerity, conviction and passion. Her love for her listeners is palpable throughout each piece. As Shaina has said, these ten songs are pieces, which helped her on her own personal journey, and I am sure they will nurture and inspire anyone who takes the time to listen. Just open your heart, relax, and allow the positive messages and majestic power of these songs to course through you.
Each song contains beautiful orchestrations, exceedingly powerful lyrics, and messages of love, healing and unity. They teach us to honor mother earth, all her inhabitants, and ourselves. Shaina has a warm, rich and highly expressive voice sent straight from Heaven, and sure to sooth your soul. The variety of material here is fantastic... from the reflective and encouraging "Brother Warrior", to the achingly lovely "Only Make Believe" and the delightfully soulful final track, "Sometimes It's Easy", every song presented is a gem, sparkling with vibrancy, intensity and power! This is music that simply must be heard, felt, and lived! This is one musical journey you truly should not miss!!! Allow Shaina and this exceptional music to guide, encourage and inspire you. I am a better person for having listened. Thank you, Shaina, from the bottom of my heart. I can't recommend this album highly enough! Please, "Listen, Listen!"
