Product Description

What do spirit mediums themselves think about what they do? What do scientists and Spiritualists think about "messages from the spirit world?" We are a social scientist and a psychotherapist who have spent ten years answering these questions. Acting as mediums ourselves, we question and marvel at our own experiences. To learn more, we interviewed 40 mediums and studied the lives of 80 others. Journey with us...INTO THE MIND OF THE MEDIUM.

Guided by Spirit: A Journey into the Mind of the Medium5
Fascinating historical background about Mediums and mediumship. The Emmons capture the human courage, doubts, dedication, and faith of mediums who are Guided by Spirit to use their gifts. This book is rich in both academic research and personal stories. Destined to be a classic reference, it is recommended reading for those learning to use their gifts of insight and for all who want to learn more about the phenomina of Mediumship within the Spiritualist religion.

Informative & well worth reading5
Using their own colorful, personal experiences and those of other mediums, the authors present an intriguing, well-rounded view of mediumship. In a field still not widely researched, this book offers a revealing glimpse into the "hows" and "whys" of communicating with spirits. Information gleaned from interviews of some of today's most respected mediums - coupled with historical facts about personalities of a bygone era - combine to make the book very readable. Yet its insights challenge the reader to examine how spiritualism fits into his or her own belief system. It's well worth reading, for both those experienced in the metaphysical and those who are just beginning a spiritual journey.

A fresh perspective5
Some time ago an acquaintance offered to do a spirit reading for me, but I felt reluctant to try what I didn't understand. Then I read "Guided by Spirit." In the book I found an objective, sensitive exploration of mediumship. It gave me a feeling for the people who channel, their motivations, doubts, methods and compensations. The seekers too are treated respectfully; I have an idea now who comes to listen, along with informed opinion on the nature, value and reliability of what they take home with them. "Guided by Spirit" includes factual background information about mediumship's place in history, religion and politics, as well as in the authors' personal journies. The Emmons' have quietly confident, relaxed writing styles inviting the reader to kick back and consider. Is there a message for me? Only Uncle Harry knows.
