Not impressed for the price, Geotrax can do better
My kids got this new geotrax piece for Christmas and were very excited. (We also got the rainbow bridge which we LOVE). For the Price $30 (although there were a few pre-holiday sales of $15-20), I was expecting it to light up when the trains go in front of this piece or under it.
THAT is my biggest complaint!!!! I like the pieces where they are activated when the trains go on them. This piece the child has to push a button the the front to make it work. It is very cool when it lights up, and we will keep it for our collection, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that isn't a collector.
OUR favorite Geotrax Add-on's are:
Clock Tower (light activated music as trains go through the tower), Rocky Falls Tunnel (light activated tunnel, water wheel spins & nature sounds), Rainbow Bridge (trains push a button as they pass on the bridge activating the lights).
A nice addition to the set
I agree that the listed MSRP of this building is very high, but they're selling it for under twenty dollars, and it's definitely worth that. The sounds that it plays are great -- pushing the button produces a mixture of city sounds, while rotating the crane produces construction sounds. Both also activate various lights.
There are a few different bits here, including a crate for the crane (which raises and lowers via a crank), a parking garage, a newsstand with a bundle of papers, and a police station. This set also includes a little bus that fits on the track.
Another good thing about this particular set is that the included track is a crossroads (one line runs along the building while the other passes through it), which was a useful addition to our existing tracks.
I really can't say anything bad about the GeoTrax system in general. My 1-year-old loves it, and frankly, my wife and I do too. We got a bunch of track packs, and it's so easy to connect pieces and take them apart that we're always experimenting with new layouts while the little guy just enjoys the toys.
My wife and I now refer to the GeoTrax system as the Best. Toy. Ever.
This is my daughter's favorite part of her (large) GeoTrax collection!
My 3 year old daughter has been playing with GeoTrax for the last 17 months. She LOVES them! By far her favorite toy. This city, even though it doesn't have the typical bells when the train drives thru, still is her favorite part. Maybe it's the large size, maybe it's all the little cubby-holes that her animals sit in to watch the train go by, maybe it's the crane that turns... she ALWAYS has to include this piece when we build a layout.
We have a pretty large collection of GeoTrax now - perhaps the city is a better addition once you've already got many other pieces which are more interactive with the train driving thru.
The only negative comment she's ever had is that the crane doesn't go down far enough to actually drop containers onto the train cars. It only goes to the "middle floor".
I have to say that GeoTrax is an extrememly educational toy. It's very mathematical to put tracks together. For the last few months, she's been building her own tracks completely on her own. They are very simple, but she's doing it, and it's awesome!! We also work together to build sometimes very complicated tracks. Absolutely a great toy and a great investment. All pieces have been thrown, dropped, she's fallen on them, and literally NOT ONE THING HAS BROKEN.
