She may have played a teenaged girl mistaken for a pop star in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but after releasing a Christmas album in 2002, and crooning two songs on the movie's soundtrack, Hilary Duff looks like she means business. The only trouble is, she doesn't sound like it. Although dubbing her first album Metamorphosis, the disc is anything but. Her singing is as coy and kittenish as her on-screen persona and she mugs her way through most of the 13 songs with charm and aplomb, but little natural singing talent. But to her credit, the actress has managed to cover a multitude of vocal sins by hiring a team of crack producers, who double her voice whenever possible, giving many of the tracks the rather anthemic feel of a cheerleading squad. The best songs on the disc are the three masterminded by the Matrix, the same production team that oversaw Avril Lavigne's hit disc and they give the lissome actress's singing some attitude and grit, like on the infectious and spectacularly bratty "So Yesterday," and the cleverly conceived "Math," complete with heavy metal guitar riffs. But Duff is not inhabiting that saucy jailbait territory staked by Britney Spears. At the ripe old age sixteen, she's much more Barbies than bustiers. --Jaan Uhelszki

This album doesn't by any means reflect Hilary's best work. Her voice is weak and underpowered and the songs aren't very good, to be honest. I'm a huge Hilary fan, but even I don't care a lot for this album.

Hilary Duff5
This world is full of all different kinds of music, movies, and TV shows. We all have different tastes in these things, but mine might seem strange to some. The reason my tastes may seem strange is that one of my favorite singers and actresses is Hilary Duff. While many of her other fans are much younger than I am, I really enjoy her fun music, and happy movies. I remember watching her grow up on Lizzie McGuire; then, she branched out into movies, music, clothing, perfume, and home décor. In recent years, she has even become a writer and producer. She is looked up to because, unlike other women of her age group and fame level, there are not stories of Hilary Duff "forgetting" to wear underwear or partying in clubs all night long. I respect any woman who can become so rich and famous without losing her identity. I think that she is a great role model for young women and is a shining example of what a person can accomplish.
Unfortunately, my high opinion of this amazing woman is rather uncommon for someone my age. I have often heard my peers say that Hilary Duff has no talent, and targets a much younger age group, often that of pre-teens. I have heard her called a terrible actress, and her music called bubble-gum pop, something that is not intended as a compliment. Personally, I love bubble gum; it is pink, it is fun to chew, and it makes me happy. Although, Hilary Duff, herself, is not pink, and I wouldn't ever chew on her, her music and movies do make me happy. Watching her older movies brings me back to a simpler time in my life, before college, even before high school. Her first CD Metamorphosis was on repeat in my room for several months. Her lyrics are easy to sing along to, usually have a great message, and the louder they are played, the better. They bring feelings of happiness and "girl power" to anyone who is listening.
I imagine the reason most people don't like her is because they are still stuck on the Lizzie McGuire version of her, but she has become so much more than that awkward, twelve year old, Disney Channel Star. Her early music is ideal for one who wants happy, cheerful, dance-along music. If one wants something a little more grown up, her newer CD's are perfect because as she has matured, so have her songs. If one is in the mood for a feel-good movie, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, A Cinderella Story, and Raise Your Voice are great choices, full of music, dancing and lots of laughs. Her zippy lyrics make one want to dance; her fun movies will entertain for hours. Once one becomes a fan he or she will remain so forever, because Hilary Duff is a woman who will continue to reinvent and improve herself for years to come.

Duff debut4
This is a fun lite pop album from Hilary Duff. Not a serious work of art, just easy listening, and what's wrong with that. Nothing. She's not the strongest singer, but she is entertaining. Here are some of the more enjoyable tunes:

So Yesterday
Come Clean
Workin it Out
Come Clean
The Math
Party Up

Why Not
