Just What I Needed
I bought this book and read it cover to cover before I got my first tattoo (three weeks ago at age 35). I wanted a tattoo, but I had two problems: I am afraid of needles and I like to know what is going to go on - no surprises.
This book answered all my questions about health, safety, cost, tipping, and the million other things that I was unsure of going into this new territory. Having read this book (about a week before I got my tattoo) enabled me to have a relaxing and enjoyable first tattoo experience. I was able to walk in to the tattoo shop already knowing how it would happen, step by step.
I would highly reccommend this book to anyone who is considering their first tattoo. The information on choosing a design and location are very helpful (in addition to all the things I mentioned above). I would say this is a 'must read', especially if you are nervous about the whole process. This takes the 'mystery' out of getting a tattoo.
In addition, the information about the history of tattooing, and tattooing in other cultures is quite interesting. There is also a good bibliography and list of helpful websites in the back of the book.
Even though I already got the tattoo, I still pick up the book and read sections of it. It is interesting to read now that I have been inked. I'm sure that I will read it again before getting my next tattoo. (I'm already working on a couple of ideas!)
This book was much better than I expected...
I have several tattoos, including large ones that required multiple sittings. I would like to think I know pretty much all there is to know about getting a tattoo, but man, I learned so much from this book! It is well written, easy to read and full of funny facts and trivia that I had to share with anyone that would listen! I would suggest this book to anyone, from someone looking to get their first tattoo to veteran tattooees and even tattooists. (Okay, I am making up words I think...) GREAT BOOK!
The Ultimate in Preparation
I bought this book together with the Tattoo Encyclopedia. Even though they're by the same author, they're very different! This one is absolutely everything you need to know when you actually get your tattoo - from how much it will cost to how to keep from getting an infection. It's totally readable and fun and is packed with factoids and pictures! Use the Tattoo Encyclopedia first and then this one.
