As short as it is, this book still makes me cry at the end.
Seven Daughters and Seven SonsSeven Daughters and Seven Sons by Barbara Cohen
Buy new: $6.50 / Used from: $2.22
Ironically, this is a very feminist story, based on an Iraqi folktale dating back to the eleventh century

A very cute, unique, modern twist on fairy tales
Alanna : The First AdventureAlanna : The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce
Buy used from: $5.08
A girl disguises herself as her twin brother and sets out to learn to be a knight someday. This book is good for pretty young girls, but later sequels follow Alanna as she becomes an adult, and should perhaps be read by mature teens. Nothing raunchy or descriptive, but they do mention her having sex.
The Squire's Tale (The Squire's Tales)The Squire's Tale (The Squire's Tales) by Gerald Morris
Buy new: $3.99 / Used from: $1.61
Oh, these books are so great! Morris has a wonderful sense of humor, and all his books are based on ballads of King Arthur's knights. In order, they are: The Squire's Tale The Squire, His Knight, and His Lady The Savage Damsel and the Dwarf Parsifal's Page The Ballad of Sir Dinadan The Princess, The Crone and the Dung-Cart Knight The Lioness and Her Knight The Quest of the Fair Unknown
Prince OmbraPrince Ombra by Roderick MacLeish
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01
My sixth-grade teacher gave me this to read. I don't know any short way to describe it, but it is very good.
Hero and the CrownHero and the Crown by Robin McKinley
Buy used from: $3.84
Every girl and woman should read Robin McKinley. Her writing is very rich, and sucks you into her world. I don't usually go in for this kind of fantasy, but McKinley makes it great. These books are good for teens. Other must-read McKinley include: The Blue Sword Beauty The Outlaws of Sherwood Deerskin (only for mature teens!)
