You'll need the DVD. This is only if you want to buy it. The advantage to buying this is that it comes with SUPPORT. If you want to -- it's free on http://www.ubuntu.com/ for download or even ordering a CD, thanks to those folks at ShipIt (but it takes about 3 - 4 weeks to get to you). But again, the advantage here is the support!

Get this if you're just starting to use Ubuntu. It is a novice book; however, it proves quite useful. It will help you as if you were getting used to Windows XP or Vista for the first time with a few tips.
Beginning Ubuntu Linux: From Novice to Professional (Beginning, from Novice to Professional)Beginning Ubuntu Linux: From Novice to Professional (Beginning, from Novice to Professional) by Keir Thomas
Buy used from: $3.50
The book title says it all -- has things for all "ages" of progression from novices to "professionals;" however, I would note that the Ubuntu Linux Bible or Userbase is still more desirable if you want to be an ADVANCED user (above professional). ;)
Beginning Ubuntu Server Administration: From Novice to Professional (Expert's Voice)Beginning Ubuntu Server Administration: From Novice to Professional (Expert's Voice) by Sander van Vugt
Buy new: $26.39 / Used from: $13.98
Get this if you want practical advice on Ubuntu server administration. It's great for the novice as well as the professional. It has sound advice if you're switching to Ubuntu as well (tips and tricks of the trade, I like to say). It also helps you migrate from other distros like RedHat/CentOS or even Debian. It's all based around Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Unleashed 2008 Edition: Covering 8.04 and 8.10 (4th Edition)Ubuntu Unleashed 2008 Edition: Covering 8.04 and 8.10 (4th Edition) by Andrew Hudson
Buy new: $36.49 / Used from: $23.87
WARNING!! (I know this is unusual but --) For 8.04/8.10 (current versions out there). I'll be honest, I have not read this -- but looking at in a bookstore today actually it looks like there was not a lot of change from the last version. Read the reviews (they seem terrible). I would NOT buy this simply because of the version number, stick to something else.
Ubuntu Linux BibleUbuntu Linux Bible by William von Hagen
Buy new: $26.39 / Used from: $8.32
This is the ultimate bible on Ubuntu Linux. Use it as a reference guide. Use it as a place mad. Use it for whatever. From novice to advanced user -- you will be able to use it. I would most likely get this book above all others if you find yourself easily self-educated.
Linux Pocket GuideLinux Pocket Guide by Daniel J. Barrett
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $4.46
I am adding this one on a few months later. Through my experience in #ubuntu on irc.freenode.net (check it out for support and/or questions if you have not been there), many Ubuntu users need to learn a *bit* about the command line. This is the perfect guide to all variables involved in daily Linux-life and command line syntax! And it's very affordable.
