What Goes On in Pet Town
Pet Town is the kind of getaway where animals of all species hang out, ride the gondola all day, get their hair done in the salon, ride the scooter, and get fascinated by elevators. The included monkey and dog are magnetized to stay securely on their rides, and there's plenty of room for enhancing Pet Town with additional pets and Pet Nooks later.

Pet Town is divided down the center by a pole, at the top of which is a wind-up key that powers the "gondola," a ride consisting of pets sitting in baskets that move around a circle. Although the ride could last a bit longer--even when fully wound, it stops after about 20 seconds--the gondola is the toy's best feature, with the baskets making sharp, swinging turns and the pets' heads bobbing in response to the motion. At the base of the pole, the scooter is secured in place by snapping a tab behind the front wheels into a corresponding slot which is then moved by turning a thumb wheel.
Securing the scooter via the tab-in-slot method is a good idea and certainly ensures that it stays on the track, yet younger children may have trouble getting it attached properly. The thumb wheel is difficult to turn; it drags rather than spins. The "elevator" is an open-ended tube that operates by placing the pet inside on a center pod and manually moving it up and down. The right side of Pet Town consists of the "cafe," the "playroom," and the "salon," identified as such by stickers. Overall, the construction of the various moving parts is sturdy. The two included animals, a monkey and a dog, are made of soft plastic with heads that bob when in motion, and they are posable when still.
Cute Animals, Bright Colors
The bright colors and the numerous moving parts make Pet Town a toy that should hold the interest of young children. Additionally, the embossed flowers and cobblestones, trellises, and other assorted designs in the plastic add a nice tactile dimension for young fingers. The animals themselves are wonderful, with endearingly sweet faces. To earn its space, the elevator could do even more: Equipping it with a wind-up feature like the gondola has would make it more appealing. The right side of Pet Town, perhaps because only two animals are included, seems sparsely populated. Additional pets and accessories are sold separately, but they're really necessary if the salon, cafe, playroom, scooter, elevator, and three seats on the gondola--not to mention the various ledges and nooks--are to be used.

Fun toy, not very sturdy
This is a fun toy for a child, but not that sturdy. The gondola ride does not always work and the baskets have a habit of falling off, leading to missing pieces. The front portion of the grass by the elevator broke off; I have not been able to get a replacement part for this. For the price, you would expect better quality.
GREAT!
This toy was the beginning of my 7yo daughter's discovery and subsequent love of LPS. She has had hours and hours of play out of this. The Gondalas are the main feature (no batteries!!) and the whole 'town' is often transformed into a Motel/Hotel with each of the 'rooms' accommodating guests. We have the Cafe adjoining and the park and next birthday is about to see the addition of the Get Well Centre. Surprisingly (I thought this was for younger kids) the LPS and in particular this town which is our main toy from the LPS, has been a winner. We got this really cheap, for the price we paid it's been well worth it.
Littlest Petshop Pet Town
After my 7-year-old daughter had been playing Littlest Pet Shop on the wii for a few weeks, I bought her two LPS pet figures to keep up her interest in the game. This led to more and more pet characters who ultimately needed a home. The LPS Pet Town proved perfect both in size and in price (at least from Amazon sellers). While my daughter doesn't play the wii game any more (it's too easy for her age and becomes repetitive after a couple of weeks), she is still in love with the Pet Town and plays with it every day, inventing situations and stories for her LPS pets. Since the moving Gondolas do not require batteries, that's an added bonus. The clockwork mechanism does have a habit of not working correctly all the time. You wind the key and then press it down to get the Gondolas moving but a lot of times the Gondolas stop moving when you release the key and you have to press it another couple of times for it to "stick" and keep going (small niggle there). The lift, accessories, scooter and included pets make for a lot of fun from what I see and although not really supposed to be "educational" in value, it lets the kids' imagination run wild leading to a lot of creative thinking. In my opinion this toy is worth the money just for the creativity factor but I think this will work only if children have played the console game because then they can associate the toy with the game background and continue from there. I don't think it would be so much fun if bought as a gift without the kids having played the console game, although kids always seem to have a huge amount of surprises in stock and may prove me wrong. I have no qualms for having bought this toy for my child and hope you will have the same experience.
