![]() | Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $16.99 Don't worry about the length. This is the definitive adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice". With enough time, this miniseries was able to explore all the wonderful minor characters and quirky interactions.

![]() | Sense & Sensibility (Special Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.20 The only complaint I have is that Emma Thompson was too old to play a 19 year old. Other than that this adaptation was just about perfect. The acting was spot on and the script's academy award was justified.

![]() | Emma
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.65 While some prefer the 1997 TV adaptation, my heart belongs to this 1996 offering with Gwyneth Paltrow. This is probably the most comedic of Austen's adaptation outings, and Jeremy Northam was great as Mr. Knightley.
|
![]() | Persuasion
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.77 This is my final recommendation for an Austen adaptation. I have yet to find a good adaptation of "Mansfield Park" or "Northanger Abbey". This low-key adaptation may be the best.

![]() | Jane Eyre (Masterpiece Theatre, 2006)
Buy new: $23.49 / Used from: $29.98 I absolutely loved BrontÃab's "Jane Eyre", but was always unhappy with the adaptations I had seen. That is until I found this gem. Toby Stephens seems to have finally captured that fire that made Rochester so dashingly intriguing.

![]() | Our Mutual Friend
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $9.18 I have never been one for Charles Dickens, but this adaptation made me go out and read the book. The biggest plus for this version is the solid acting, especially Paul McGann and Keeley Hawes.

![]() | A Room With a View (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $25.99 / Used from: $40.82 I have watched this movie multiple times and love it every time. This delightful adaptation is for anyone delighted with the light-hearted novel.
|
![]() | The Moonstone
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $10.00 Before Agatha Christie, Wilkie Collins pioneered the mystery novel. "The Moonstone" was one such novel. The solid regulars are here with Greg Wise and Keeley Hawes in starring roles.
|
![]() | The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition)
Buy used from: $68.98 Peter Jackson's trilogy strays from the novel a bit, but the spirit is alive and well. Make sure to see the extended.
|
![]() | Jeeves & Wooster: The Complete Series
Buy new: $49.99 Reading the Jeeves and Wooster tales one might think they're unfilmable. However, the writing on this show put all worries to rest. Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry defined the characters on the screen.
|
![]() | Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.75 This dashing tale of King Richard's disinherited knight is given full treatment here. Movie adaptations fail to get at the root of the political struggles at the time.
|
![]() | The Scarlet Pimpernel
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $11.76 Anthony Andrews is superb as the Scarlet Pimpernel. He plays the fop so well I almost could not stand the character. Then he turns so well into the fearless hero.
|
![]() | Wuthering Heights 1939 Classic Black and White with Original Theatrical Trailer (Import, All-Region)
Buy used from: $16.83 This adaptation missed half of the novel, and the character was significantly toned down. On the other hand, the acting by Sir Laurence Olivier and the rest of the cast make this one the most enjoyable to watch.
|
![]() | Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.62 Okay, I love mysteries, especially the Poirot mysteries. I would add the entire Poirot series with David Suchet, but I couldn't find it. However, Mr. Suchet has yet to film "Murder on the Orient Express".
|
![]() | The Tenant of Wildfell Hall
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $8.99 Toby Stephens makes another appearance on this list. While his role is compelling, Tara Fitzgerald carried this adaptation as the title character.
