a bit more gritty than some of the others, though a favorite. centers on social discrepancies between northern and southern england. has one of the best endings you can possibly get!

if you enjoyed forsyte series 1, this is essential. i like it much better than the first, although it is important to watch them in chronological order.

based on Elizabeth Gaskell's novel, who also wrote North and South. i personally preferred the plot of n&s over wives and daughters, but it's a great film worth seeing.

a film that definitely doesn't get enough credit. the soundtrack is a little funky, but the story is great and unlike any other period film. a trillion times better than the most recent version.

wonderful; waddell and milburn are fantastic. be warned, though, the entire film is utterly and completely tragic. have some tissues on hand.

dark and often chilling, it strays from the typical costume drama style. very bleak, but excellent.

it's impossible to imagine that James D'arcy, who was the cruel step-brother in Tom Jones, could possibly play a "nice" character. he proves everyone wrong in this film; it's a must-see, though in typical Dickens style, heartbreaking at times.
