You may as well listen to this one on audiotape. It is a slow and dense read, so hearing the voices makes it easier to connect with the story. It is a knock-off, a Jane Austen parody of the type of gothic novels that were popular back in her day.

I haven't listened to all the audiobooks, but this version, read by Juliet Stevenson, is Delightful! She does a great job with the Steele sisters. Just listen to Ms. Stevenson as she does the elder Miss Steele tell about how she listened at the door when Mr. Ferrars proposed to Lucky! Hysterical.

I have an old 1969 version of the Penguin Classic, which has a terrific introduction by Austen scholar, Tony Tanner. I love the way Tanner describes the heart of the novel (at the middle of the story) being Marianne's anguished scream. Whenever I read this now, I'm preparing myself for that scream. Chapter 1 contains one of the most delightful 'setting the stage' that I have ever read.
Pride and PrejudicePride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Buy new: $7.00 / Used from: $1.47
The tension in Jane Austen's novels is maintained by the conflict between economic necessity and romantic love. Her heroines face obstacles based on their social class and gender. Their romantic choices can make them either rich or homeless. So there's an awful lot at stake on every page. In this book, Elizabeth decides to hold out for love rather than marry for money.

The quentissential DVD edition. 8 hours worth. Captures the nuances of the characters in a way that has not been done since. Mr. Collins is priceless, but Collin Firth is the Darcy to die for. Bravo!
Emma (Penguin Classics)Emma (Penguin Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $4.25
I have to admit that Emma is my favorite Jane Austen. The wonderful characters: Mr. Knightly, Miss Bates, Mrs. Elton. In the middle of the book, Emma tells Harriet that spinsterhood is only disreputable if you are poor. If you are indepently wealthy then it is entirely to be desired. Why marry some idiot when you can have peace and quiet? (paraphrasing, of course). ;-)

This is a Briilliance audiobook - they've done a great job with other books, like Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning. This version is very good. A movie is an abridged, collapsed version of the story. The audiobook brings the unabridged story to life with the voices.
Emma (1996)Emma (1996)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.49
This is a great version, Mrs Elton is truly revolting, and Mr, Knightly is wonderful! Harriet sort of gets on my nerves, but the story isn't about her anyway. Ewan McGregor makes an appearance as Jane Fairfax's lover, rank Churchill, but that part of the story is not so well developed in this DVD.
Emma (BBC, 1972)Emma (BBC, 1972)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.00
The BBC version of Emma is a bit dry, but it properly focusses on the Jane Fairfax story. Mr. Knightly is not as wonderful, but you finally understand why the duplicity of Frank Churchill was so wrong.
CluelessClueless
Buy used from: $2.98
This is a wonderful knockoff of Emma. A sort of updated, modern version. Focuses too much on the Harriet part of the story, and the fact that Emma herself is not entirely the most sympathic character. Mr. Knightly is still wonderful.
Persuasion (Penguin Classics)Persuasion (Penguin Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: $6.00 / Used from: $0.89
This is my second favorite story by Jane Austen. Anne Elliot is a very interesting, confliced character. In this story, Jane Austen brings in the sailors who were becoming part of the middle class after the war.

This is my favorite (2 hour) movie of a Jane Austen novel. Quiet and powerful. Capt. Wentworth is magnetic! I realized at one point (my 10th viewing) that you don't even hear Mr. Elliot propose to Anne, because she doesn't hear it - she's so focussed on Capt. Wentworth in the drawing room scene. Don't watch the BBC version of this story! Yuck.
Mansfield Park (Penguin Classics)Mansfield Park (Penguin Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $2.90
This is the only Jane Austen that explores the impact of slavery - which was a big part of what brought wealth to those English families that composed the society that Jane wrote about.
Lady Susan, The Watsons, Sanditon (Penguin Classics)Lady Susan, The Watsons, Sanditon (Penguin Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: $8.80 / Used from: $0.90
Lady Susan is a sort of Le Liason's Dangereuse - Dangerous Liasons, in a novel. Lady Susan is not very nice (in a humerous way). The story unfolds in a series of letters.

This book is a MUST have for all fans of Jane Austen. It is a compendium of facts about Jane Austen, and lists of things about the characters. My favorite list is: The Most Obnoxious Character (Mrs. Elton is #1). Other characters are rated by 'Eltons,' the way that movies are rated with 3, 4, or 5 stars depending on how good they are.

This is an excellent book with which to understand, through each and every novel, just how Jane Austen uses manners to criticize the world in which she lived.

This is a great book - though very academic, so be warned. It helped me learn how to read some of the words that she uses.
