A truly perfect movie, the 1942 Casablanca still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Conrad Veidt are among what may be the best supporting cast in the history of Hollywood films. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. --Tom Keogh

Play it again
Outside of perhaps 3 other films this is very likely the most perfect film ever made. The selection of characters--Bogart, Bergman, Reins, Henreid--is absolutely ideal.--it is difficult to imagine any other actors playing these roles, or playing them as well. The acting and the directing are absolutely inspired. Shot in black and white the cinematography is excellent. The music and the plot twists are themselves spell binding--all in all a landmark film.
Not that special.
Casablanca is a good film but not a masterpiece. The story is bit boring but the love triangle is the best part of the film. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman had incredible chemistry together, they are magic on-screen. This little black & white film noir is a classic but expext some flaws. Take it or leave it.
A masterpiece of all time.
Wow There are plenty of great reviews on Amazon for this excellent film but I thought that I might add my own. Casablanca is one of those great classic films starring Humphrey Bogart as Rick the owner of Casablanca's most popular cafe a guy who "sticks his neck out for nobody" and Ingrid Bergman as the beautiful Ilsa who comes to the cafe along with her husband Victor Lazlo a freedom fighter (Paul Henried) who's looking for a passage to Lisbon a move that is impossible unless he has an exit visa, thats where Rick comes in to help out but the problem is that he's still in love with Ilsa as they were former lovers in the past while in Paris. Casablanca is superbly directed, acted and filmed. When it was released in 1942 it was a remarkable film and remains to be a classic to this day it was also released during WW2. The script was terrific and the dialogue was perfect there were some great lines which were very memorable "Vultures, vultures everywhere" not to mention the great cast of characters that appear each actor giving us a great performance especially Bogey who was a great and legendary actor, O.K. so maybe some of it was a bit too old and dated like when Ilsa refers to Sam the piano player as boy but then again who cares, at first I didn't think that I would like it since I wasn't used to old b/w Hollywood films just a few years ago but I was soon convinced its a great war film and love story with some good drama and romance. I'd rather watch Casablanca a thousand times then watch the latest awful CGI blockbuster from Hollywood, it is a timeless classic that should be watched by everyone.
Here's looking at you, kid ;-)..........
