War and Peace (Penguin Classics)War and Peace (Penguin Classics) by Leo Tolstoy
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $0.50
If you had to read just 1 book in your entire life this should be it. The most moving and brilliantly observant book ever written. Skip the dull theoretical bits and you'll have the read of your life. 10
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's NestOne Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.83
I appreciate the film so much more after reading this. Exciting, funny, intelligent and poignant, a brilliant glimpse of a wild and irrepressible spirit. McMurphy is a 3 dimensional Dean Moriarty. 9.5
Anna Karenina (Oprah's Book Club)Anna Karenina (Oprah's Book Club) by Leo Tolstoy
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $0.35
Was perhaps even better written than W&P, but the dramatic level was somewhat reduced in comparison. As a result i was virtually unaffected by the famous tragic ending. 9
The Brothers KaramazovThe Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $7.99
Supposedly Dostoevsky's finest work. Don't know if i enjoyed it as much as Crime And Punishment but it was certainly a riveting and at times scintilating read. Very exciting character writing. 9
Fahrenheit 451Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.80
I don't entirely know why i enjoyed this book so much. I just couldnt put it down. Was a very easy read with some sparkling characters and a nice kinda moral message. 9
To Kill a MockingbirdTo Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.25
A really gripping read: The last few hundred pages are unputdownable. All stories about righteous struggles against social injustice are in some way compelling. 9
The Great GatsbyThe Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Buy new: $8.37 / Used from: $4.30
I really enjoyed this book whilst i was reading it. I Loved the rich, romantic style of writing. Once i finished it though i realised there was no plot and it felt a little pointless. 9
The Man in the High CastleThe Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $3.25
A stunning, complete work of speculative fiction with great psychological insight, an intriguing use of 3rd person narrative and even the odd modernist flourish thrown in too. A little anticlimactic, but still a great read. 9
The IdiotThe Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $7.89
More of D's compelling character writing. More charming than his other novels for the romance themes that run through it. Loses pace a little in the middle but has an absolutely astonishing ending. 9
Slaughterhouse-FiveSlaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.97
Loved the style this was written in. A wonderfully resigned and irreverant yet humane attitude to fatality and the atrocities of war. 8.5
A Clockwork Orange (Norton Paperback Fiction)A Clockwork Orange (Norton Paperback Fiction) by Anthony Burgess
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $4.95
As a story it failed to leave as much of an impact on me as the film did. The best thing was the language; loved it! The voices in my head were speaking in Nadsat for the next month. 8.5
Dracula (Signet Classics)Dracula (Signet Classics) by Bram Stoker
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $0.01
Not particularly well written but was a very thrilling, gripping and at times very spooky novel. Certain scenes have really stuck with me. Ending felt like a bit of an anticlimax though. 8.5
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (Signet Classics)Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (Signet Classics) by Robert Louis Stevenson
Buy new: $3.95 / Used from: $0.99
Catches you off guard how spooky and compelling this story can be. Stevenson is like a cross between Dostoevsky and Poe, but not as good as either. A little too short for its own good. 8.5
Notre-Dame de Paris (Oxford World's Classics)Notre-Dame de Paris (Oxford World's Classics) by Victor Hugo
Buy new: $10.16 / Used from: $1.47
Hugo seems to care more about the architecture than the characters. Takes a long time to get going, but get past the first 300 pages and you have a really powerful story on your hands. 8.5
Death of a Salesman (Penguin Plays)Death of a Salesman (Penguin Plays) by Arthur Miller
Buy new: $9.60 / Used from: $0.66
Y'know how in 'Of Mice And Men' Lennie and George spend a lot of time dreaming about a bright future, in contrast to the misery they live in, that you just know will never happen? That's what this is like; ALL THE WAY THROUGH! Painful but brilliant. 8.5
The Road to Wigan PierThe Road to Wigan Pier by George Orwell
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $2.71
A combination of anecdotal journalism, journalistic reporting and an essay on why socialism is so bloody great. As fascinating, informative and well-balanced as any other Orwell book. 8.5
Keep the Aspidistra Flying (Harvest Book)Keep the Aspidistra Flying (Harvest Book) by George Orwell
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $1.99
The best of Orwell's 'lesser' novels. A book obsessed with money; the shame of poverty, the ubearable burden of middle-class respectability. Surprisingly very enjoyable. 8.5
The Old Man and The SeaThe Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway
Buy new: $9.60 / Used from: $2.00
Not sure whether i like Hemingway's sparse style or not. The story was pretty engaging and the intricacies of deep sea fishing were really interesting to read about. 8
The StrangerThe Stranger by Albert Camus
Buy new: $8.76 / Used from: $2.77
Still not convinced that existentialism is anything more than a big unphilosophical shrug. That shrug was what made me really like this book though. An intriguing view of life and mortality. 8
A Tale of Two Cities (Signet Classics)A Tale of Two Cities (Signet Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy used from: $0.39
Got the impression it was written from the end backwards. Starts off with loads of disconnected strands tht can be frustrating. If u stick with it though the end will absolutely blow you away. 8
Père Goriot (Oxford World's Classics)Père Goriot (Oxford World's Classics) by Honoré de Balzac
Buy new: $9.56 / Used from: $3.23
Balzac semi-autobiographically recounts his own sordid rise through the shameless, exploitative society that he depends on and loathes in equal measure. 8
Oracle Night: A NovelOracle Night: A Novel by Paul Auster
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $0.79
Apparently not one of Auster's best. Ultimately feels incomplete and a little unfocused but fortunately is spooky and imaginative enough to redeem itself. 8
Burmese Days: A NovelBurmese Days: A Novel by George Orwell
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $2.98
Fascinating like every George Orwell book. A good read but i felt a little let down by the ending. It's pretty shocking when you find out that it's a true story. 8
A Clergyman's DaughterA Clergyman's Daughter by George Orwell
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $3.60
For Orwell's weakest and least read novel this is actually a brilliantly well written novel. Can't imagine a modern novelist dismissing a work of this quality the way he did. 8
Coming Up for Air (Harvest Book)Coming Up for Air (Harvest Book) by George Orwell
Buy new: $11.90 / Used from: $3.92
Probably my least faveourite Orwell book. All the usual, stunning psychological and socio-political insight but somehow less enthusiastically delivered than in his other novels. 7.5
Dubliners (Dover Thrift Editions)Dubliners (Dover Thrift Editions) by James Joyce
Buy new: $2.00 / Used from: $0.01
A very uneven collection of short stories. Most of them at least leave you with quite a powerful final image but some of them feel a little pointless. "The Dead" is excellent. 7.5
On the RoadOn the Road by Jack Kerouac
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $1.30
Can almost see why this novel was so inspirational to the youths of its generation. Dean Moriarty doesnt satisfy as a 3 dimensional character though. Kerouac uses the word sad too much. 7.5
Les Liaisons dangereuses (Oxford World's Classics)Les Liaisons dangereuses (Oxford World's Classics) by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos
Buy new: $8.76 / Used from: $2.10
A very well fleshed out and intelligent novel considering it comes from the C18th. Gets rather good towards the end but sadly, takes a little too long to get there. 7.5
Women in LoveWomen in Love by D. H. Lawrence
Buy new: $3.50 / Used from: $0.82
Another overly-baggy, Dostoevsky-Inspired novel except with the twist of that wild passion being smothered by the British 'stiff upper lip'. Moments of brilliance but generally inconsistent. 7.5
Stories of Anton ChekhovStories of Anton Chekhov by Anton Chekhov
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $5.88
Dostoevsky's Passion and Tolstoy's observation lovingly compressed down to 20 page long stories. Wonderfully economical and at times haunting but generally a little underwhelming. 7.5
The Count of Monte Cristo (Penguin Classics)The Count of Monte Cristo (Penguin Classics) by Alexandre Dumas père
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $8.00
Some truly brilliant plot ideas wasted on flat characters and an inconsistent storyline. Pretty good overall but doesnt sufficiently reward 1000+ pages worth of investment. 7.5
Hamlet (The New Folger Library Shakespeare)Hamlet (The New Folger Library Shakespeare) by William Shakespeare
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $2.00
Didn't get it I'm afraid to say. The thing with the poisoned sword was cool but otherwise it was a little hard to care too much about anything that was going on. 7.5
The Master and MargaritaThe Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $5.24
Actually a lot less exciting and funny than such a surreal set-up would lead you to expect. Aside from the occasional, masterful bit of speculative writing and one or two charismatic characters the novel is ultimately a little pedestrian. 7.5
Gulliver's Travels (Signet Classics)Gulliver's Travels (Signet Classics) by Jonathan Swift
Buy new: $5.95 / Used from: $0.01
Not as cutting or satirical as it's supporters would have you believe. Love the ideas though; kept forgetting that i wasn't actually 600ft tall. 7
The Scarlet Letter (Bantam Classics)The Scarlet Letter (Bantam Classics) by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Buy new: $3.95 / Used from: $0.01
Sits alongside Frankenstein and Wuthering Heights as one of the many C19th novels that feel a little rushed and half-hearted. Decent but unremarkable. 6.5
The Man Who Would Be King and Other Stories (Oxford World's Classics)The Man Who Would Be King and Other Stories (Oxford World's Classics) by Rudyard Kipling
Buy new: $8.76 / Used from: $1.25
Only a short story really, not a lot of conviction in it. The film is much better. 6.5
The Turn of the Screw (Dover Thrift Editions)The Turn of the Screw (Dover Thrift Editions) by Henry James
Buy new: $2.00 / Used from: $0.01
Some aspects of this were compellingly spooky and eerie, but ultimately there was no development and it all felt a little pointless. 6.5
Moby-Dick (Bantam Classics)Moby-Dick (Bantam Classics) by Herman Melville
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $0.01
Really a 100 page novella. The other 400 pages consist of aimless dialogue and essays about Whaling. A novel about anticipation or merely the work of a supremely undisciplined author? I'll leave that to you. 5.5
Heart of Darkness (Dover Thrift Editions)Heart of Darkness (Dover Thrift Editions) by Joseph Conrad
Buy new: $1.50 / Used from: $0.01
Dont really get it. A guy narrates a story where he goes to africa, finds a guy called Kurtz, uses the word darkness about 100 times, Kurtz dies. Whats the big deal? Apocalypse now is better. 5
Frankenstein (Enriched Classics)Frankenstein (Enriched Classics) by Mary Shelley
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $1.24
So, so, so overrated. How has this book become so famous? Not the slightest bit of scientific realism to it, amateurishly garbled narrative and even a some horrible amateur poetry. 3.5
