Books I read in 2007

Dracula (Signet Classics)Dracula (Signet Classics) by Bram Stoker
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $0.01
It's called a classic for a reason. The characters don't work for me, the setting is almost completely foreign, the dialogue canned. Even so, I felt compelled to keep turning the pages. Beautiful.
Brave New WorldBrave New World by Aldous Huxley
Buy used from: $0.94
Disturbing, odd... that about sums it up. Glad I read it, though.
Frankenstein (Penguin Classics)Frankenstein (Penguin Classics) by Mary Shelley
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $1.49
Gotta love academics. There're people out there claiming this book is secretly about homosexual love. Reading this, I laughed as much as I wanted to cry. If this is homosexual love, they have my pity. This is a tale of horror stemming from one man's unthinking ambitions multiplied by his unwise pride. The result is a powerful, thinking, jealous creature bent on vengeance against Frankenstein.
Atlas Shrugged: 35th Anniversary EditionAtlas Shrugged: 35th Anniversary Edition by Ayn Rand
Buy used from: $5.50
Atlas Shrugged is a philosophical agenda enshrined in a novel. The plot is unbelievable at points, the heroin less than heroic, the premise hostile to religion (just as the author was also hostile to religion), and yet it certainly gives food for thought. Like her plot, Ayn's premise is flawed, but I'll be mulling this one for a while. At 1,168 pages, it's alot to digest.
Fool's Errand (Tawny Man, Book 1)Fool's Errand (Tawny Man, Book 1) by Robin Hobb
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.85
Another pleasure from Robin Hobb. This is another glimpse into the soul of FitzChivalry Farseer, from her Farseer Trilogy. Once again, Fitz' tortured quest to exist in a world that would destroy him draws me in, and I go eagerly. We learn more of the Fool (now Lord Golden), and get an accounting of those he left behind. Once again, FitzChivalry Farseer becomes the Catalyst.
Golden Fool (The Tawny Man, Book 2)Golden Fool (The Tawny Man, Book 2) by Robin Hobb
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.78
Alot of plot building, but not much happens. There's no climax, certainly not the kind you usually expect from Robin Hobbs. Still enjoyable.
The Picture of Dorian Gray (Modern Library Classics)The Picture of Dorian Gray (Modern Library Classics) by Oscar Wilde
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $1.50
... I'll get back to you.
Fool's Fate (The Tawny Man, Book 3)Fool's Fate (The Tawny Man, Book 3) by Robin Hobb
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.14
I couldn't ask for a better resolution to the story of FitzChivalry Farseer. Magnificent.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) by J. K. Rowling
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $4.89
Ouch. Is this really how Rowling 'planned' the conclusion of this series? Not very satisfying at all, but I suppose I'm less attached to it than most seem to be.
PreyPrey by Michael Crichton
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Once again, Crichton spins an enjoyable tale. Not as good as his best, but his worst is better than some of the titles on this list.
London Bridges (Alex Cross)London Bridges (Alex Cross) by James Patterson
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
This is the only James Patterson book that I have read thus far... I have to say I'm unimpressed. I've seen movies based on some of his other books, and I'm left hoping that at least some of his titles are anywhere near as enjoyable as the movies.
The World of DarknessThe World of Darkness by White Wolf Game Studio

The Knight: Book One of The Wizard KnightThe Knight: Book One of The Wizard Knight by Gene Wolfe

The Wizard: Book Two of The Wizard KnightThe Wizard: Book Two of The Wizard Knight by Gene Wolfe

Shaman's Crossing: Book One of The Soldier Son TrilogyShaman's Crossing: Book One of The Soldier Son Trilogy by Robin Hobb
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.45
Wonderful prose, deep characters, and a plot that will never let you know just what's coming next. Everything I have come to hope for when picking up a book by Robin Hobb.
How to Lose a Battle: Foolish Plans and Great Military BlundersHow to Lose a Battle: Foolish Plans and Great Military Blunders
Buy new: $11.86 / Used from: $0.61
Hilarious and informative! Best way to spend a night when you can't sleep.
The House of God: The Classic Novel of Life and Death in an American HospitalThe House of God: The Classic Novel of Life and Death in an American Hospital by Samuel Shem
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $3.99
I can see sooooooo much of this actually happening. A humerous but frank look at the state of medicine in the 1970s. I think we still see the same patients today!
Soldier of the MistSoldier of the Mist by Gene Wolfe
Buy used from: $0.01
After receiving a head wound in battle, Latro, a persian soldier, lives through a dizzying array of events set in the ancient mediterranean, his fate buffetted by the whims of both human and supernatural powers. At moments profound, this book drags at other points, and has a strong literary bent unusual amongst most titles found in the fantasy/sci-fi aisle.
