Shearer, Crawford, & Davis: Hollywood's Leading Ladies
By an Amazon.com customer
Marie AntoinetteMarie Antoinette
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.99
1938- Considered by many to be Shearer's greatest motion picture, her portrayal of France's most scandalous Queen earned her an Academy Award nomination. Though Bette Davis gave a stellar performance that same year in "Jezebel" and won for best actress, I personally feel that Miss Shearer deserved the win. Watch and see why Miss Shearer said that this was her favorite role to play.
Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934)Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934)
Buy used from: $16.77
1934- Period drama that proved once again that Shearer was at her top form. The film tells the story of the real-life romance between poets Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browing. Charles Laughton is at his best playing Elizabeth's cruel and selfish father. A huge success at the box office, Shearer earned another Academy Award nomination.
Divorcee (1930)Divorcee (1930)
Buy used from: $5.75
1931- Pre-code, classic that gave Shearer her only Academy Award for best actress. The film is outdated by today's standards be it that it deals with such a controversial issue of the time; divorce.
Smilin Through (1932)Smilin Through (1932)
Buy used from: $39.99
1932- Nominated for Best Picture, Shearer plays a woman who is taken in by a man who had lost his fiance at the altar when killed by a former lover. Great plot that shows off Shearer's strengths as an outstanding actress. Not available on DVD and hard to find VHS, but a must see!
A Free SoulA Free Soul
Buy used from: $3.50
1932- Yet another pre-code film. Though this film earned Lionel Barrymore an Academy Award for best actor, it is more importantly recognized as the film that introduced Clark Gable as a Hollywood leading man. Shearer received an Academy Award nomination for best actress.
Romeo and JulietRomeo and Juliet
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $10.49
1936- Not remembered as the best rendition of Shakesphere's famous play, it still holds up pretty well, considering that Shearer was twice the age of her character, Juliet. This was the last film that was completely produced by Shearer's husband, MGM head, Irving Thalberg, before his death. Shearer gained another Academy Award nomination for this role.
The Women (Keepcase)The Women (Keepcase)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $12.11
1939- In Shearer's last important film of her career, she gives an A+ cat-fight, along with the rest of the ALL FEMALE cast. Shearer plays a woman whose husband has been wooed away by a sleazy shop girl, who is perfectly portrayed by Shearer's real-life MGM rival, Joan Crawford. Directed by famed women's director, George Cukor. "L'amour, l'amour."
Mildred Pierce (Keepcase)Mildred Pierce (Keepcase)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $12.65
1945- Joan Crawford's greatest performance, which not only won her an Academy Award for best actress, but it revitalized her career and crowned her the new queen at Warner Brothers. Crawford is Mildred Pierce, a mother who will do anything for her spoiled daughter.
PossessedPossessed
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $10.48
1947- Crawford shines in this film noir where she plays a woman who goes mad when the man she loves rejects her. Van Heflin gives an awesome performance as the man Crawford wants but can't have. This gave Crawford her 2nd oscar nomination. "DAVID!"
Dancing LadyDancing Lady
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $10.45
1933- MGM Fluff is what this picture amounts to, yet it ranks up as one of her best teamings with actor, Clark Gable, whom she appeared in eight pictures with. Crawford plays a dancer who is put on the big stage with the help of Gable. Look for Fred Astaire's screen debut as well as Crawford's future husband, Franchot Tone.
Autumn LeavesAutumn Leaves
Buy used from: $17.97
1956- Joan plays the older woman in a love affair that occurs with a much younger Cliff Robertson. Crawford said that this was one of her favorite fims. “Where’s your decency? In what garbage dump, Mr Hanson? And where’s yours, you tramp? You, his loving, doting fraud of a father and you, you slut! You’re both consumed with evil so rotten your filthy souls are too evil for hell itself!”
Sudden FearSudden Fear
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $17.00
1952- In the film that introduced actor Jack Palance, Crawford portrays a playwrite who falls in love with a man who is plotting to murder her. Crawford's facial expressions throughout the picture tell it all. She received her third and final Academy Award nomination.
Grand Hotel (Keepcase)Grand Hotel (Keepcase)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.87
1932- Art-Deco film that consisted of an all-star cast including Greta Garbo, John & Lionel Barrymore, Wallace Berry, & a young Joan Crawford. Crawford proves she is able to hold her own amongst Hollywood's best. The film took home the Academy Award for best picture.
Harriet CraigHarriet Craig
Buy used from: $24.99
1950- An underrated film that proves Joan Crawford could act, or maybe not. In real life, many of Harriet Craig's traits resembled Joan's such as an infatuation with a clean house, as well as working in a laundry at a young age (Joan's Mother worked in a laundry). Great film that needs a DVD release soon!
The Damned Don't CryThe Damned Don't Cry
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.42
1950- Crawford plays tough as nails, Ethel Whitehead, in a picture about a woman who will do almost anything to survive in a world that is dominated by men. Great acting from the entire cast, and a must see for any fan of Crawford and film noir.
HumoresqueHumoresque
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.29
1946- Crawford plays New York socialite Helen Wright who is in love and fixated by violinist, Paul Boray, portrayed by John Garfield, who easily steals the screen right out from under Crawford. Great picture just the same with plenty of musical interludes. A bit overrated.
Strait-JacketStrait-Jacket
Buy new: $14.94 / Used from: $9.45
1964- What Joan Crawford list would be complete without her ultra B-Picture, campfest, horror film, cheese-ball, cult classic, Strait-Jacket? Definitely not her best role, but non-stop fun. I won't spoil the plot, but watch for her to light a match on a vinyl record. CULT CLASSIC!
Berserk!Berserk!
Buy used from: $15.75
1968- For some reason I always refer to this film as a very poor man's "The Greatest Show on Earth", except with a murderous twist. Joan's now in her sixties but even age won't stop her from showing off her fabulous legs. Skip over "Trog" & view this as Joan's last semi-worthy picture.
TrogTrog
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.63
1970- Joan's poor attempt at a horror flick brings her long and once fabulous career in movies to an end. *WARNING: FOR OBSESSED, DIE-HARD CRAWFORD FANS ONLY!
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (Two-Disc Special Edition)What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $9.99
1962- Screen legends, Joan Crawford and Bette Davis are teamed for the 1st and only time. Both women had a long-time rival built up and the animosity on the set made for great footage. Crawford plays a crippled, classic movie star living with her long forgotten, child star sister, Jane, played by Bett Davis. Davis recieved her 10th and final Academy Award nomination.
Jezebel (Restored and Remastered Edition)Jezebel (Restored and Remastered Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.85
1938- Davis took home her 2nd Academy Award for best actress, playing a spolied, southern belle. More than anything, this is remembered as the southern costume drama that wasn't "Gone With The Wind," which premiered one year later. Though the latter of the two is truly suberb, Jezebel remains a great classic, and one of my favorite Daivs roles.
Now, Voyager (Keepcase)Now, Voyager (Keepcase)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.99
1942- In an ugly-duckling role, Davis is transformed from a spinster into a wealthy socialite. Davis plays Charlotte Vale, a woman who is dominated by her mother, and loves a man who is obligated to another. This film gave Davis her 6th Academy Award nomination.
All About Eve (Two-Disc Special Edition)All About Eve (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $10.50
1950- Bette Davis is Margo Channing. Margo Channing is Bette Davis. Never has there been such a film that clicked in every aspect. Davis plays a theater actress who is "up-staged" by a calculating Anne Baxter. Davis earned her 8th Academy Award nomination and the film went on to win Best Picture. "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night."
Mr. SkeffingtonMr. Skeffington
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.97
1944- Though it received mixed reviews from the public and critics, Davis gives one of her strongest and most believable portrayals as Fanny Skeffington, a woman who must learn the hard way the true meaning of love. Davis earned her 7th Academy Award nomination.
Dark Victory (Restored and Remastered Edition)Dark Victory (Restored and Remastered Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.94
1939- Davis always recalled this picture as her favorite. In the film, Davis portrays a flighty socialite who soon realizes that all the time she wastes partying and having fun is all coming to an end due to an illness. Davis garnered her 3rd Academy Award nomination.
All This & Heaven TooAll This & Heaven Too
Buy used from: $10.49
1940- Underrated, and often forgotten film where Davis plays a governess to Charles Boyer's family. A scandal soon surrounds the two as lovers, and thus the picture takes off. All actors give beleivable and stellar roles. *DVD realease: April 1, 2008!
The Little FoxesThe Little Foxes
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $6.46
1941- Regina Giddens is evil to the core. What she wants, she gets. Davis ruthlessly portrayed this southern vixen, earning her a 5th Academy Award Nomination.
In This Our LifeIn This Our Life
Buy used from: $5.79
1942- Bette plays the character that one loves to hate but can't feel sorry for. Greedy and selfish sums up Davis portraying Stanley Timberlake. Olivia De Havilland co-stars with Davis for a 3rd time. *DVD release: April 1, 2008
The Private Lives of Elizabeth and EssexThe Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.00
1939- Bette Davis takes on the role of Elizabeth I, who is in love with a much younger Earl of Essex, portrayed by the dashing Errol Flynn. Davis would reprise her role as the Queen 16 years later in "The Virgin Queen", though her performance falls short in comparison to her 1st go round.
The StarThe Star
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.76
1952- Davis is cast in a role that portrays an aging actress who finds it harder each day to land a part in a picture. Watch for the scene where Davis takes a joy ride with one of her oscar awards. She received her 9th Academy Award nomination.
DangerousDangerous
Buy used from: $8.94
1935- Davis' first Academy Award winning performance, where she plays Joyce Heath, a washed up, alcoholic, stage performer who truly believes she is a jinx. Franchot Tone gives a great performance as Davis' jaded lover. Davis always considered this oscar win as a consolation prize for not winning the previous year in "Of Human Bondage."
Hush... Hush Sweet CharlotteHush... Hush Sweet Charlotte
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.48
1964- One of Davis' last worth-while pictures, it was invisioned to be a sequal to the popular "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" Davis and Crawford were again cast, but Crawford backed out at the last minute, feigning illness, as to not have to work with Bette Davis again. Crawford was replaced by Davis' long-time friend, Olivia De Havilland.
