About the Brand

A label from the earlier days of Zatarain's

The tradition for making Zatarain's amazing New Orleans-style products was started well before the turn of the century by a man named Emile A. Zatarain, Sr. In 1889, he obtained the company's first product trademark and started to market root beer. Shortly after, he began to produce mustards, pickled vegetables, and extracts. As the business grew, so did the demand for a broader range of products. Through their expertise in blending spices, the company established a reputation for making only the most authentic New Orleans-Style food. In 1963, the Zatarain family sold the business, which was then moved to Gretna, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans.

Today, Zatarain's is the nation's leading maker of New Orleans-style food products. Zatarain's prides itself on great taste, high quality, and a near fanatical dedication to New Orleans cuisine. Interestingly, Zatarain's is as much a tradition at backyard barbecues as it is at formal dinners. An easy winner
This is an easy to make meal that is different from your garden variety meal-in-a-box. I tend to use smoked sausage with the mix. The sausage is precooked so it soaks up flavor from the mix as the whole thing simmers.

When I had more time, I tried mixing smoked sausage and grilled chicken. The chicken was marinated with an off-the-shelf louisiana cajun style marinade and then grilled. Slice and put the chicken in at the end when the rest is done (or the chicken will dry out being "cooked" a second time) and it was fantastic. Since the point of this meal is to be quick, I only did this method once, but it was great.

Only downside is that the meal is a bit oily, and leaves a residue at the bottom of your dish. This just reminds you that this dish is better served as a guilty pleasure than an everyday meal.

A Family Favorite ... And Easy, Too!
In our house, we're big fans of Cajun fare. However, I don't often have the time to spend making homemade gumbo or jambalaya. Zatarain's mixes are pretty darned good everyday substitutes.

When we make this jambalaya at home (at least once a week), we add chicken, as well as some fresh andouille sausage that our local grocery makes. I often have people beg me for the recipe, then have to tell them that it was a mix. Not only is this a great-tasting, hearty meal, it couldn't be easier to prepare; and it only takes about 30 minutes! And with the $10 discount that Amazon is offering right now, the price on this 12-pack can't be beat.

Zatarain doesn't disappoint.
After trying it once, I keep my pantry stocked with Zatarain's Jambalaya mix. Making Jambalaya from scratch can be daunting but this is perfectly seasoned out of the box. I've tried using a variety of meats, chicken, and sausage and never tire of the flavor.

This is a "must have" for those who love authentic Jambalaya but don't want to make it from scratch.
