The masked men of wrrestling4
This is a great book that chronicles in Spanish and English the world of Mexican wrestling or as it is known, lucha libre. It is filled with interviews and essays where you learn the inner thoughts of the legends of the ring. Although the great Carlos Monsivais Carlos Monsivais: Culture and Chronicle in Contemporary Mexico,Mexican Postcards (American and Iberian Culture Series) who is a master at social commentary, is listed as the author, he writes the introduction and the rest is a compilation of essays by a variety of authors. The real author is the photographer,Lourdes Grobet, who in my opinion, makes this a photographic essay deluxe book. Apparently she has followed the careers through her camera lense for many years, dating back to the golden age of Mexican wrestling. Here you will see the Blue Demon, El Santo, Dona Virginia, and to many to mention here, superstars from different eras. The book is fun trip down memory lane for some, whereas for others it is a way to discover the roots of current Mexican wrestling and the similarities and differences to WWE. The photographs are spectacular, not only of the wrestlers but of their fans in the different arenas throughout Mexico. The photographs are in color and black and white but regardless, they are vivid reminders of that deep rooted cultural identity, symbolic to Mexican wrestling, the mysterious maked man. This book is recommended for all fans of wrestling. This is a good book for browsing or reading as there are many photographs that are full page reproductions. It is a fascinating look at the world of lucha libre through the camera lense and eyes of Lourdes Grobet.
