EarthboundEarthbound
Buy used from: $87.13
Tired of playing the same old rpg? If you haven't played Earthbound, you don't know what an original rpg is. You'll battle it out with the likes of hippies, robots, deranged cultists, and even your anoying next-door neighbor in a variety of exotic locales and urban American settings. The fate of the earth, nay the universe, is in your hands!
Little Samson (NES)Little Samson (NES)
Buy used from: $79.99
Little Samson is very rare, but to make up for it, this game is an excellent action/platforming experience. You get to take charge of four different characters which include a human protagonist, a dragon, a golem, and a mouse who all have unique abilities. To top it off, the animation and graphics are some of the best that the NES has to offer.
Secret of EvermoreSecret of Evermore
Buy used from: $8.75
Secret of Evermore never quite achieved the same fan-following that Secret of Mana did, but if you're a fan of SoM, you owe it to yourself to take this game for a spin. The gameplay is real-time much like SoM, and the time-traveling feature in SoE allows for some imaginative level-design. SoE may not be the monster that SoM is, but it's still an excellent action-rpg.
Phantom DustPhantom Dust
Buy new: $91.99 / Used from: $4.99
Phantom Dust was released as a budget title for the XBOX, and it's even cheaper now. This game has it all: excellent graphics, a bizarre storyline, complex but addictive combat with tons of customization, superhuman powers, destructible environments, and challenging yet rewarding gameplay.
Suikoden IISuikoden II
Buy used from: $69.00
Many consider Suikoden II to be the swansong of the series. There are some definitive features that separate Suikoden from most rpgs: you can recruit up to 108 characters, your party maxes out at six active members, you get to create and name your own castle, there's some epic, turn-based strategy thrown into the mix, and the story is top-notch.
Time Splitters 2Time Splitters 2
Buy new: $89.99 / Used from: $8.10
First of all, this game was created by the development team behind Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64. The single-player campaign is fun and extremely challenging, and the addicting multi-player mode has a large selection of wacky characters with various abilities. I'm talking robots, zombies, gingerbread men, and chimpanzees to name a few.
Ogre Battle 64Ogre Battle 64
Buy used from: $29.00
The N64 wasn't known for its rpgs, but Ogre Battle 64 was an exceptionally good title. More specifically, this game is a tactical rpg, and frankly, not everyone is a fan of these types of games. If you're new to the strategy rpg genre, I recommend doing some research before committing to a purchase.
Beyond Good & EvilBeyond Good & Evil
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $7.50
This underrated action/adventure title was released on the GameCube, PS2, and XBOX, and it still sold poorly. An updated sequel for the PS3 and XBOX 360 is on the way.
Panzer Dragoon SagaPanzer Dragoon Saga
Buy used from: $166.66
Many people who have actually played this game consider it to be the greatest rpg ever made; I however, will never know because it's too frickin' expensive. Only around 20,000 of these babies were ever made.
OkamiOkami
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $12.99
Another great action/adventure title that was available originally for the PS2 and now on the Wii. The Wii version has better visuals, but the controls are much better in the PS2 title; in other words, the PS2 version is the one to own.
Zack & Wiki Quest for Barbaros’ TreasureZack & Wiki Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure
Buy new: $67.94 / Used from: $11.00
This is an adventure game, and the bulk of it deals with solving various environmental puzzles in order to collect pieces of treasure. This game makes good use of the Wii remote; you'll have to manipulate the controller in all sorts of unique ways if you want to progress.
IcoIco
Buy used from: $35.87
Perhaps the best game you never played and a cult classic on the PS2.
Lufia II: Rise of the SinistralsLufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
Buy used from: $29.00
Yet another obscure, SNES rpg; if you're looking for a way to squeeze more joy out of your SNES, this is it.
Brave Fencer MusashiBrave Fencer Musashi
Buy new: $249.99 / Used from: $17.99
Don't confuse this game with its inferior, PS2 sequel; this title features action/adventure at its best.
Skies of Arcadia : LegendsSkies of Arcadia : Legends
Buy new: $108.74 / Used from: $19.13
Sky pirates + epic rpg = win. If you're still not convinced, check out the reviews.
Rocket Knight Adventures-Sega Genesis-Video GameRocket Knight Adventures-Sega Genesis-Video Game
Buy used from: $1.99
In this platformer, the 'possum protagonist has a jet pack and a sword, and it makes for a very good time.
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd RunnerZone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner
Buy new: $149.99 / Used from: $20.99
Intense, high-flying, mech action; easily one of the best representations of the genre.
Metal Arms: Glitch in the SystemMetal Arms: Glitch in the System
Buy new: $57.97 / Used from: $3.20
What's that? A great XBOX shooter that you haven't played? Don't let the robot's cute exterior fool you; he's packin' heat.
Robot Alchemic DriveRobot Alchemic Drive
Buy new: $52.82 / Used from: $12.96
In this game, your giant mech is operated via a human character with a remote control device; it's like controlling a giant toy, and you have to battle it out against other opposing robots. The control scheme is very innovative.
SnatcherSnatcher
Buy used from: $81.98
An adventure classic made by the master, Hideo Kojima, himself.
Earth Defense Force 2017Earth Defense Force 2017
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $14.00
A third-person shooter where you kill giant insects? Sign me up! That aside, it can be rather repetitive at times, and it's more fun killing things with a bud. However, it has a relatively cheap price tag.
Dragon ForceDragon Force
Buy used from: $64.00
If you're fond of strategy rpg's with an innovative twist, you'll love this game.
Fatal Fury: Mark of The WolvesFatal Fury: Mark of The Wolves
Buy used from: $20.75
This title is often considered to be one of the best 2-D fighters in existence, and I think it may be possible to get it cheaper than this on a different console.
Fire Pro Wrestling ReturnsFire Pro Wrestling Returns
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.34
This game, despite it's lackluster graphics, is considered to be THE BEST grappler around; if you're a fan of wrestling titles, that should be enough to motivate you to play it.
Custom Robo ArenaCustom Robo Arena
Buy new: $13.75 / Used from: $5.99
Design your own robot, and fight against others. Oh yeah, it's good too.
Gitaroo ManGitaroo Man
Buy new: $59.95 / Used from: $18.25
Before Guitar Hero became a mainstream phenomenon, there was Gitaroo Man, and boy was it a lot weirder (plastic guitars need not apply).
Kid DraculaKid Dracula
Buy used from: $21.00
This is one of the best titles available on the original Game Boy. Despite the obvious Konami relation to Castlevania, it plays more like Mega Man.
Tetris AttackTetris Attack
Buy used from: $6.99
I'll come right out and say it; this is the best puzzler you can buy for the SNES, and it features characters straight out of Super Mario World 2.
River City Ransom (NES)River City Ransom (NES)
Buy used from: $16.99
This game combines the beat-em-up action of Double Dragon, and the side-scrolling, rpg elements of Zelda II. You can even play with a friend. If you have a Wii, this title is available for download on the Virtual Console at the much cheaper price of $5.
Game Boy Mole ManiaGame Boy Mole Mania by For the Nintend Gameboy
Buy used from: $1.34
Mole Mania was a short-lived Nintendo franchise developed for the Game Boy that, believe it or not, plays a lot like Zelda.
Sparkster Super NintendoSparkster Super Nintendo
Buy used from: $19.98
This is the sequel to Rocket Knight Adventures on the Genesis, and it's also one of the most visually stunning SNES titles.
Ardy LightfootArdy Lightfoot
Buy used from: $35.75
This game combines Sega's infamous blast-processing gimmick with the grab-and-throw combat of Super Mario Bros. 2. The graphics are reminiscent of Super Mario World (not a bad thing); the only difference is that the character sprites are noticeably larger.
Uncharted Waters: New HorizonsUncharted Waters: New Horizons
Buy used from: $22.54
I'm not exactly sure what genre to place this game in (sim/adventure?), but here's the premise: this game allows you choose between a merchant, pirate, explorer, etc., and sail across the seven seas whilst fulfilling class-based objectives like discovering ancient ruins, trading, etc. You also get to do a fair bit of micromanagement like selecting your crew, purchasing supplies, etc.
Ninja WarriorsNinja Warriors
Buy used from: $13.39
Possibly the best single-player beat-em-up on the SNES. Ninjas + Cyborgs = Greatness
King of DragonsKing of Dragons
Buy used from: $13.83
Sixteen levels of co-op, rpg style, beat-em-up action in a medieval setting. This is one of the great beat-em-ups for the SNES.
Strider 2Strider 2
Buy used from: $23.95
The sequel to one of the best games in the genesis library, and despite some past success, it's relatively unknown to the average gamer.
Tactics OgreTactics Ogre
Buy used from: $95.00
Another great strategy/rpg from the company that brought us the Ogre Battle series. Some would argue that it's even better than Ogre Battle.
PlokPlok
Buy used from: $5.64
This happens to be one of the best platformers on the SNES. You actually use the detachable arms and legs of your character to defeat enemies and solve puzzles.
Ignition FactorIgnition Factor
Buy used from: $6.35
A firefighting game for the SNES that's actually a whole lot of fun, and the going price is currently only $2.91.
Pikmin 2Pikmin 2
Buy new: $99.99 / Used from: $28.24
THIS is how you make a real-time strategy title for a console. It's also one of the best games for the Gamecube, and in my opinion, it far outshines the original. You may want to wait to purchase the cheaper Wii version (providing you own a Wii).
