All the classic tales are here, as the Great Detective and his faithful companion, Dr. Watson, tangle with the terrifying Hound of the Baskervilles, the beautiful adventuress Irene Adler, and the dastardly villains Colonel Sebastian Moran, Charles Augustus Milverton, and the Napoleon of Crime himself, Professor James Moriarty.

The Perfect Sherlock Holmes!
Jeremy Brett Plays The Incomparable Sherlock Holmes With The Forcefulness And Resourcefulness That The Real Holmes Would Have Used. Brett Brings Holmes To Life With The Drama/Mystery That The Original Stories Showed Me As A Child.
Would I Recommend This Dvd Set, YES!!!
Classic in every sense of the word
Having enjoyed the first episodes of this brilliant series back in Europe in the late eighties, it was a pleasant surprise to find this box at the Local Costco (about 30% cheaper than advertised here).
Many strong critiques have been posted here, that went into this set's many strengths and weaknesses, so I won't revisit most of them.
As an "ebullient extrovert" Brett was a rather unlikely choice to play the "Myers-Briggs INTJ" Holmes, yet the late Englishman may have portrayed the definitive Sherlock. While it may not please all, Brett turns Holmes more and more into a "character" starting in the 1987 episodes, providing more of a dynamic leading voice against Hardwicke's superb Watson. Thanks to the ubiquitous use of "real locations", the great historic details and the strong perfomances by both regulars and extras, and the diversity of Conan Doyle's tales this is a superbly entertaining box.
I do agree with some remarks about the textual accuracy of the later installments of this series and the tendency to combine tales in one episode. The Hound of the Baskervilles is weak, not to speak about the Last Vampyre.
Yet, this set, which remains "unfinished" due to Brett's untimely death, is still as good as it gets. Both in bringing the tales and the period alive as in especially's Brett's acting. Just the "Jungian" ending to "the six Napoleons" where the introvert struggles in dealing with a well meant and deserved compliment is worth the price of admission.
Definitive Holmes
Beautifully reconstructed. First class attention to detail and the period.
Excellent performances by the entire cast especially Brett.
I watched the entire series telecast in India in the '80's and '90's and am indeed have been recently watching the episodes again on History Channel.
Ive also collected each and every one of this series on DVD via ebay. First class quality.
Well worth the expenditure to add to your home dvd collection if you are a "holmes-ian" or Sherlock Fan. Highly recommended, in my opinion.
Except for a few episodes - Last Vampyre, Eligible Bachelor etc, every other episode was brilliant. These two mentioned above, were slightly implausible and only based on Conan Doyle's work - not very good adaptations because too much license was granted to the directors/ screenplay.
Otherwise, a "simply Must Have!"
