Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Product Description
Lodge cast-iron cookware has long been admired for its superior heat retention and even heat distribution, but now the company adds another enticement with its Lodge Logic line. All Lodge Logic cookware, including this generously sized 15-1/4-inch skillet, comes preseasoned via a proprietary "electrostatic" vegetable oil spray system and is ready for cooking right out of the box--unlike traditional Lodge cookware, which needs seasoning in your home oven before use. During the timesaving preseasoning process, oil penetrates deeply into the cast-iron surface while a high-temperature gas oven seals it in, preserving the cookware for generations and creating an attractive heirloom finish.

The skillet measures 15-1/4 inches in diameter and 2-1/4 inches deep--an ideal size for large tasks such as cooking a stack of pancakes or making a family portion of scrambled eggs. The vessel is also suited for roasting vegetables, searing steaks, or making quesadillas, as its cast-iron material delivers a smooth, consistent temperature without wasting heat. The pan's esteemed heat retention particularly enhances slow-cooking recipes that call for tender meats and rich, seasoned flavors. Chefs will also appreciate the durable handle with a loop on the end for hanging, along with the opposite helper handle that aids in transport--a necessity when cooking with heavy cast iron. And finally, the skillet includes a couple of side indentations that facilitate smoother pouring. Lodge recommends hand washing the pan with a stiff brush and hot water for best results. The skillet also comes with a lifetime warranty.

Customer Reviews

Nice alternative to teflon5
I've decided to replace my teflon pans with cast iron and this is one of the first ones I bought. So far it has been excellent. The large size is fantastic, though it's definitely heavy. My arm muscles are getting a workout! I'm glad I got it pre-seasoned, since that was one less thing to hassle with. I have found that cooking with cast iron makes food taste better. Kind of surprsing. I'm not sure why this has been the case, but my husband and I have both noticed it. I have to say though, it is very different than cooking with a regular teflon pan. At first I kept burning everything. Cast iron gets very hot and maintains a steady hot temperature. I'm finding that I'm basically cooking everything in this pan on med-low heat, where I would have used medium heat. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase though and plan on getting a couple more cast iron pans

The Best Cast-Iron Skillet5
If you want the best cast-iron skillet, buy the Lodge. I have four other skillets of theirs and one skillet is a least 40 years old, and still in top condition. The only complaint that I have with this 15-1/4 inch skillet, is that the inside bottom is not smooth; but it was still easy to clean after making chicken milk gravy.

It's not the pan in the picture5
The Amazon picture of this item is that of a different pan. To visualize this item, think of the handle as having the dimensions of a popsicle stick, with the rest being comparable in size to a manhole cover. Yes, it is that big. The price I got from Amazon, $29.99 plus free shipping, is by the pound about 4 times higher than the world market price for bulk scrap iron, but on the other hand this merchandise is delivered to one's doorstep in the shape of a useful finished cooking utensil, with an excellent preseasoned treatment. If you have a high-output gas burner on your stovetop, you can witness the contest of irresistable force against immovable object. Throw two pounds of mussels into it, right out of the box, or a big steak, or a pan pizza. You might need to order a little red wagon to cart it around the house, but if you've got the wagon already, this is a fabulous deal. This massive, imperturbable object has led me to wonder, who will be using it 300 years from now? Well, if they still have fires in their kitchens then, they'll be thinking the same thing too.
