The ERGO Baby Carrier in combination with our Infant Insert enables you to buy only one carrier that will assist you through all the stages of your baby's growth. The insert is specially padded and shaped cushion that can be quickly and easily placed in the carrier and readjusted or folded to pad just the right places for your infant. Your infant is then cradled in a cozy, protected environment close to your heart and breast. Your baby is supported with both feet to one side in a sling-like position. This is best for the baby's physical development from newborn to around four months. Parents can remain attentive to their baby's needs at the same time continue daily activities because parent and baby are like one. The Hood can be extended for privacy when nursing or as a sun shield. Here at ERGO we are advocates of our babies facing inward towards the parent in the vertical front carry position. Dr. Eveline Kirkilionis describes it best in her book, "A Baby Wants To Be Carried." Infants in outward-facing orientations can't turn away from surrounding stimuli that become overwhelming. In this position the baby cannot make eye contact with his or her parent to evaluate facial expressions, social cues, and so forth to make assessment of the situation. Only choose a baby carrier that allows your child to face you,..never out.

Not necessary
I think this item is unecessary. I returned the one I ordered because my son was too large for it (at 3 weeks old ... ), and after chatting with friends who have the Ergo they also mentioned that a blanket can be used if needed in place of the insert. I'm happy with the seller and would purchase from them again, however the item didn't seem useful once I had it in hands.

Use a blanket or small towel instead
As much as we love the Ergo Baby, this insert thing just confused us. It doesn't really fit very well and is hard to get in place. It's very floppy / flimsy and really doesn't provide any support for the babies head (which is why we thought it would be good to have)

We ended up using a lightweight fleece blanket about 2-1/2 foot square.

I don't think you need this.

Very handy
This insert is required for putting a small infant into the Ergo carrier. It is wonderful to be able to use the Ergo with a tiny baby. However, while this item is handy because it is perfectly sized, it could be eliminated in favor of a folded blanket with some stiffness to it, if you want to save the money. As long as the shape, size, and stiffness approximate a quilt of the dimensions of this insert, your baby will be fine -- I've tried it.
