Outdated Maps-Add $80 to Get Current Maps-Magellan Customer Service Stinks
I do not recommend this unit as it will ship with outdated maps and is not eligible for the 30 day N/C upgrade. If you add the $80 cost of the unit with an additional $80 to upgrade the maps you are better off purchasing a new version or different navigator all together.
It took three separate calls to Magellan Customer service to find a representative that was even aware that the company offered a 30 day map guarantee and that this unit is not eligible. Purchase this system ONLY if you do not want current maps and plan on never needing knowledgeable customer service.
Don't buy
Magellan Customer service is the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. They offer a free 30 day map update since all of their products ship with out of date maps. This would be a good thing except it is in the fine print of their products and their customer support email address that their website list is the wrong address. I had to get through to their customer service by posting a bad review on their website. By the time they responded my unit was beyond the 30 day limit and they refused to give me the update. This is a bad business practice. Garmin has a 60 day guarantee which is posted directly on their website in plain view.
Meets all of my needs
Let me preface this review by stating that this is the first GPS navigation device that I have purchased. I used a friend's GPS device once before while on vacation. I'd also like to state that I don't need to use the device on a daily basis. I only use it when travelling or if I'm driving to some place I've never driven to before.
With that disclaimer, I've found this product to be extremely useful. The device acquires its location very quickly. I recently used it while on a snowboard trip in Colorado. Driving through the mountains, the device never lost its location until I entered a tunnel (the display changed from "map" to "maneuver list"). Upon exiting the tunnel, the device immediately reacquired its location. I found the text-to-speech feature to work very well (it knows how to say "Peña") and I can pretty much drive around without staring at the display.
The trip planner is a nice feature that lets you enter multiple destinations that you can visit in order. It allows up to 25 points, I believe.
For my use, the points of interest are nice to have, but not critical. If I'm looking for some place in particular, I'll search the Magellan for it first. If it's not in there, then I just use my iPhone to find the place, then enter the address as the destination.
Buyer beware: after purchasing the refurbished unit (which works perfectly) I found that it includes maps from 2007 and is not included in Magellan's free map update policy. So, I found the 2008/2009 map update for around $56 on Amazon. Since I bought the unit for about $70, this brought the total price up to about $126. I still consider this a good deal given the device's features and performance. One thing to note, the unit came with around 1 million points of interest, and the map update increased that to around 6 million.
My one gripe about the unit is that the USB/charge port is located on the left hand side of the unit. Since I like to attach it to the left hand side of the windshield just above the dash, driving around with the unit plugged into the cigarette lighter port is awkward.
