Acclaimed for the quality of its art, design, and content since its debut in 1971, The Witches' Almanac offers a treasury of ancient lore and legend many readers cherish as collectible editions. As the original and authentic guide and companion for adept, occultist, and witch, the Almanac provides readers adventurous browsing. Not just a yearly almanac, this is a volume that can be read at any time. With numerous articles bringing mystery and time-honored wisdom to each reader, this work can be an inspiration whenever you desire a bit of the unknown in your life. After celebrating our twenty-fifth year, we have moved on to a larger format, with a layout that is easier to read and beautifully designed. Illustrations and medieval woodcuts abound in this handsome edition.
The element of water rules this issue. We observe divination by sea shells, the magic of waves, and stories of extraordinary sea creatures. Read of Oshun, the great water goddess of Nigeria, and learn the magic of sea shells and of raindrops. Also appreciate honey bees, tarot cards, herb lore, and spells. Test recipes for ancient incenses or modern providence. Study mythology, moon gardening, Celtic trees, and more.
Within the Almanac pages every year you will find horoscopes of amazing accuracy by Dikki-Jo Mullen, astrological predictions, phases of the moon, regional meteorology, accounts of mystical rites and rituals, mythologies of ancient gods and goddesses, worldwide folklore, back stories of ancient sites, plant and animal lore, and many a curious tale of good and evil. Sound interesting? It is.

wonderful almanac
I first discovered the Witches' Almanac during their brief run in the '70s; a few years ago I found they were again publishing, and have been getting them yearly ever since. They are indeed a moon-phase-based almanac that follows the astrological year (beginning each year in spring on the vernal equinox), and include the occasional planting tip as well as the birthdays of various famous folk (some generally so, others more well-known to the Pagan community), moon phases, all the holidays important to Pagans, and an assortment of aphorism ranging from "feed the birds'" and "recall a fond memory" to "draw down the moon" and "scry for a vision"--and that's just on the calendar pages themselves. Also packed into these little books is a wealth of interesting articles, classic tales retold, book reviews (Harry Potter books for 2006-2007, Anne Rice for 2007-2008), poems, recipes, weather predictions for the year, extensive astrological horoscopes for each sign for the year, and the occasional spell. Sadly, the final surviving founder of the almanac, New England witch Elizabeth Pepper, passed away in July of '05; she had started the almanac with John Wilcox, who is also gone now. While the '06-'07 issue retained the look of the other volumes in it's later publishing history, the '07-'08 volume has a revamped look and a new larger size (hurrah, more stuff!) as it has moved forward under the editorship of one Theitic. But it has retained all of it's previous features and regular contributors (Dikki-Jo Mullen for horoscopes, Tom C. Lang on the weather), as well as the many wonderful black-&-white woodcuts that have been the hallmark of the Witches' Almanac from it's inception.
A little bit of the Witches Almanac died with Elizabeth Pepper
I have subscribed to the Witches Almanac since 1980. It was established and edited by Elizabeth Pepper. There was something sweet and obscure about the information Elizabeth put together in each Almanac that made it priceless. It wasn't slick and commercialized. It didn't include popular culture's version of a "witch". It was a soft, all-paper almanac. Unfortunately, Elizabeth passed away and the new editors have changed the Almanac for the worse. It is covered in an icky, high-gloss book cover that takes away from the pen and ink drawings that used to cover the old version of the Almanac. The new editors even have references to Harry Potter and Anne Rice, which has NOTHING to do with generational witchcraft. I will buy a simple pocket moon calendar from now on. Goodbye, Elizabeth and Rest In Peace, Witches Almanac.
New look...
I love this almanac! The information within it's pages is relevent and an enjoyable read for any practicing witch. The new look is great. I've only had it a couple of weeks and have just about finished it (along with several other books). I know I will re-read it many times over the upcoming year. You can't get better information, and the form and function are outstanding as always.
