| Seeing Fred Frith improvising on guitars on tabletops with hammers, screwdrivers and other implements really changed my view of what music is or could be. As the arty progressive rock that I loved started to seem like it was getting re-hashed too much I found the RIO (Rock in Opposition) collective founded by Frith, Henry Cow and a few other bands was doing something less formulaic or commercial, but to me much more rewarding in innovation and depth. Some of the band like Zamla, Henry Cow, Art Bears and Univers Zero took a while to grow on me. Once they really sunk in I found they had a sincere intensity that still sounds fresh to me. | ||
