From the Manufacturer
Yogi – About the brand
Our story begins in 1969 when Yogi Bhajan, an inspired and inspiring teacher of holistic living, started teaching yoga in America. He shared the wisdom and knowledge of Ayurveda and healthy living that he had mastered in India with his students while serving a specially spiced tea, which they affectionately named "Yogi Tea." The recipe contained five traditional Ayurvedic spices: cardamom seed, cinnamon bark, clove bud, ginger root and black pepper. When blended and brewed, these delicious spices leave you feeling vibrant and alive, while boosting overall well-being. Intrigued by the complex flavor and inherent health benefits of this unique combination of spices, it wasn't long before several of the yogi's students were inspired to brew their own "Yogi Tea."
In 1984 this grassroots endeavor blossomed into the Yogi Tea Company. Packages of the rough, dried spices began to appear in natural foods stores throughout Southern California. As demand increased, the spices were more finely ground, packaged and sealed into individual tea bags. By 1986, Yogi Tea was distributed nationwide in three flavors.
Yogi has continued to expand and evolve our tea offerings to address specific health needs by creating specialized herbal formulas, blended for both flavor and purpose. Today, Yogi has nearly 60 tea blends, many of which are created using the five original Yogi spices.
Yogi's expertise in sensual well-being has inspired our newest offering, Yogi cereals. As with our teas, Yogi cereals are created with purpose and blended to enhance the health of mind, body and spirit, while enlivening your senses with delightful flavors.
Whether you need to jump start the day, recover from physical activity, calm your mind and clarify thoughts, or revive the spirit and reflect, there's a Yogi tea or cereal to meet your specific needs.
The holistic teachings of Ayurveda and healthy living are the inspiration behind Yogi. These teachings continue to inform how we develop our products, and we honor and reflect them through the Yogi Principles.
Yogi Principles- Tasting great is essential, but it isn't enough. If what we make doesn't taste great and leave you feeling great, we won't make it.
- We think before we blend or bake. How will our recipes work with body and mind?
- Health is found in nature. We work with what nature already offers rather than trying to concoct it. We don't have laboratories, we have kitchens.
- Creative combinations can optimize what nature has to offer. Ever added Goji Berry to Ginger? They work together to produce a remarkably fresh and innovative taste... and a remarkable level of energy.
- Whenever possible, we work with wholes, not parts. We don't add vitamin C. We add Indian Gooseberry, which is naturally rich in vitamin C.
About the Brand
In 1969, Yogi Bhajan, an inspired and inspiring spiritual leader, began teaching Kundalini Yoga in America. He shared the knowledge of Ayurveda and healthy living that he had mastered in India. After each class he would serve a special spice tea to his students, which they affectionately named "Yogi Tea." The recipe contained five traditional Ayurvedic spices: cardamom seed, cinnamon bark, clove bud, ginger root and black pepper. Given the unique, healthful properties of these delicious spices, they are still included in many Yogi Tea formulas as an added boost for overall well-being.
Ayurveda (science of life) is a comprehensive philosophy and health system developed 5,000 years ago in India. Ayurvedic medicine combines natural therapies with a balanced approach to treatment of disease. Ayurvedic philosophy places equal emphasis on body, mind and spirit as it strives to restore the innate harmony of the individual.
In the 1970s, small businesses began to take root under the inspiration and dedication of a number of Yogi Bhajan’s students. Golden Temple Vegetarian Restaurants opened in the United States, Canada and Europe. The rich and spicy aroma of Yogi Tea brewing permeated the environment, and soon customers wanted to brew their own at home. Through these restaurants, the first batches of Yogi Tea were sold to the public.
In 1984, this grassroots endeavor blossomed into the Yogi Tea Company. Packages of the dried spices began to appear in natural foods stores throughout Southern California. Soon, the spices were more finely ground and sold in tea bags, and by 1986, Yogi Tea was distributed nationwide in three flavors. In 1988, Yogi Bhajan and his team of master herbalists expanded the line to address specific health needs by creating highly specialized herbal formulas. In 1991, the company decided it would use organic ingredients. Obstacles immediately arose, as there simply weren’t enough organic herbs and spices available. But following a four-year-long effort, a partnership was formed with ForesTrade to source organic Indonesian cinnamon, the most-used ingredient at the time, and several other spices from community-based organic farms.
Currently, 17 Yogi Teas are certified organic, but all contain organic ingredients in variable proportion. The company sources 63 organic herbs and spices and is always looking for new organic sources as some of the natural healing herbs, oils and extracts used are not yet available organically.
Yogi Teas have continued to evolve, meeting the ever-changing needs of the customer. In 2007, the entire Yogi Tea line is being repackaged and introduced as a collection of newly defined Body, Mind, Spirit product lines. This new way of thinking takes tea beyond a simple beverage and into a way of living.
Each of the more than 50 Yogi Teas is formulated for a different purpose. Whether it’s time to jump start the day, participate in or recover from physical activity, calm the mind and clarify thoughts or revive the spirit and reflect on the world, there’s a Yogi Tea to meet that need.
Yogi Teas are developed and produced at the company’s modern manufacturing facility in Eugene, Oregon. There the highest-quality herbs and spices, expert knowledge of the health benefits of each ingredient and the wisdom of Ayurveda are incorporated into every tea.

Excellent Winter Selection of Yogi Tea!
Yogi Tea Cold Season Tea Sampler is the real deal! $16 Yogi Tea Cold Season Tea Sampler lasted me all winter, and helped me deal with sore throat and stuffy nose problems. Each box comes down to $2.64, which is the best possible deal in the market. Besides, the selection consists of premium tea. As long as you don't despise the licorice taste, you will find the tea varieties to be tasty and extremely helpful for your respiratory system throughout the cold winter months.
Perfect Mix!
I have always loved the Yogi Tea Collection and was really happy to get this Cold Season Sampler. It has all of my favorites together in one box, so that I don't have a bunch of boxes on the shelf getting old when the cold passes. Great Combination!
excellent teas---especially for respiratory symptoms
I get some nasty chest congestion when I have a cold or the flu, and the other day, when I felt the crud sneaking up on me, I used one of these teas in order to help with the congestion I knew was about to get bad. Well, normally my congestion would progress and become horrible, even making me run to my asthma inhaler (the only time I really need it is when I have a respiratory infection). But after a couple of cups of this one tea, I found myself indeed breathing a bit more easily. I can't prove it was just the tea that did this, but I can tell you that the progression of my congestion wasn't as bad as usual, and all indicators said it would be bad (I can usually tell by how bad my throat is at the onset).
Also, my sister used the one for throat comfort and found it made her own creeping crud FAR less horrific than usual. Both she and I typically begin respiratory stuff with throat problems, and the pain in our throats can get pretty bad, so it's something special when she can find a tea that helps with that.
We basically agreed that while Yogi teas are not panaceas, they are helpful in easing some of the symptoms, and that might be enough for most people to get through the cruddy cold season with their sanity more or less intact. :-)
