HEAT FOR CHEAP
IF YOU WANT SOME RADIANT HEAT (DRAFTY HOUSE? CHILLY BATHROOM?) THIS LAMP WILL DO THE TRICK HANDSOMELY, AND FOR ONLY A FEW (ABOUT $7, PLUS SHIPPING) BUCKS.
A FEW CAVEATS THOUGH:
-THE BEAM IS KIND OF NARROW, AND I SUSPECT IMPRECISE ALSO. EXPERIMENT WITH LOCATION/DISTANCE.
-IT GIVES HEAT, NOT THERAPY GRADE INFRARED.
-IT GIVES OFF SOME RED LIGHT, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT BE A PROBLEM FOR YOU. THE RED LIGHT DOES HELP YOU KNOW WHERE THE HEAT IS "HITTING". I SUPPOSE YOU COULD ALSO DO WELL WITH SEVERAL LOWER POWERED TUNGSTEN/HALOGEN FLOODLIGHTS. YOU WOULD GET LOTS OF LIGHT, PLUS HEAT. (THOUGH NOT AS CONCENTRATED AS THIS LAMP PROVIDES, AND CERTAINLY NOT SUITABLE FOR SLEEP, UNLESS YOU COVER YOUR EYES.)
-IT GETS EXTREMELY HOT. NEVER, EVER, PUT THIS BABY INSIDE A RECESSED LIGHTING FIXTURE. UNLESS ,OF COURSE, SAID FIXTURE HAS AN AIR CIRCULATING DEVICE. AND, FOR MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY, THE HOT AIR SHOULD BE FORCED DOWNWARDS. (TO WHERE THE COLD SUFFERING CREATURES ARE.)
-NEVER, EVER LOOK INTO THIS LIGHT FOR MORE THAN A FRACTION (OR LESS!) OF A SECOND. INFRARED WILL BURN YOUR RETINAS. THIS APPLIES FOR ALL LAMPS NOT JUST THIS ONE. IT IS JUST THE WAY INFRARED WORKS, NOT GE'S, OR ANYBODY ELSE'S FAULT.GE Infrared Heat Lamp, 250 Watt
Fast and Warm
I got the infrared heat lamp bulbs to replace ones that my horse broke. I looked all over town and couldn't find them - one electrical place hadn't even heard of them! We use them in the wash rack at the barn to keep horses warm in cold weather when they need some kind of bathing. These came very quickly in the mail, were easy to install and are working great!
I use them to keep my dogs warm
Here in North Carolina, it gets chilly in the garage in winter (but rarely below 20). I wanted to make my dogs more comfortable there at night, but didn't want to put in a space heater that could get tipped over. I set up one of these for each dog at one end of their kennel about 6 ft off the ground. It keeps them warm enough, and of course, they have room to move away from the light if they get too hot.
