Product Description

What breed is sillier than the dachshund? None. With their low, elongated bodies, souldful eyes, and truly ridiculous proportions, dachshunds always look like they're telling a joke. Their owners get the joke, so they do things like organize everything from the annual Dachshund Parade in New York's Washington Square Park to the Weenie Run in Memphis, where hundreds of Dachshunds show up to rejoice in their dachshundood. Day of the Dachshund is for this crowd. In a gift-friendly little hardcover format-a bit more horizontal than unusal, for obvious reasons, Jim Dratfield combines 60 great photographs with delightfully clever quips to celebrate the endless charm of this unlikely breed.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
With their squat legs and sausage-shaped bodies, it’s no wonder dachshunds have long been referred to as "weenies" and "hot dogs." Photographer Dratfield (Pug Shots, etc.) takes advantage of these ignominious nicknames, shooting a portrait of a dachshund standing regally in front of a hot dog-shaped concession stand and another in which two affronted-looking dachshunds are ensconced in bun-shaped casings (these same two dogs don hats for a second photo titled "kosher hot dog"). Fortunately, not all of Dratfield’s 60 duotone photos play upon this hot dog theme. He includes the requisite shot of a glassy-eyed puppy wedged into a small container ("a pup o’ tea"), a playful photo of a dachshund peeking out of a long "mail dox" and an irreverent picture of a dachshund licking the naked buttock of a classical statue ("tongue ’n cheek"). At times, the book tries too hard for humor—as is evidenced by a heavily cropped photo of a dachshund lounging on a dock ("sittin’ on the dox of the bay")—but the photos succeed in highlighting the quirkiness and charm of this singular breed.

Weiner Dogs Take Over the World5
"Petographer" Jim Dratfield captures the quintessential essence of the Dachshund in this book of artfully-done, sepia-toned photographs. It's a shame the Amazon listing fails to include a few of the shots inside the text, which run the gamut from a pair of doxies dressed in hot-dog costumes to a couple regarding each other with the doleful Dachshund "love-eyes," all accompanied by fairly clever captions (like "Kosher hot dogs" when the aforementioned weiner-dogs in bun costumes have donned Jewish yarmulkes). Although a few of the photos and captions are less-than-effectively selected, on the whole, "Day of the Dachshund" offers an excellent selection of cute Dachshunds doing what they do best: look cute and silly at the same time.

This dachshund lover a little disappointed...3
This a small book already and unfortunately there is only one photo for every two pages. The photos are cute and need no words to bring a smile to my face so I could have done without the cute captions added; some of which were placed DIRECTLY ON THE PHOTOS themselves! FYI-There are some wonderful dachshund notecards available through Amazon with 4 of the book photos. I would definitely recommend those.

The absolute best books of dog photos I have ever seen are PRINCE AND OTHER DOGS and PRINCE AND OTHER DOGS II by Libby Hall. A must-have for any dog lover.

Beautiful-so well designed-book- LUXURY!5
I received this book as a Xmas present last year. I am a full time doxies mom and i am in love with the breed. I am also a graphic designer, I think this book is VERY well designed and all the photographs have a great sense of design. The short title on every page makes me smile and the author/photographer KNOW exactly what a dachshund personalities are. This book is very good for everybody, every ages. Kids will enjoy this book as much as an adult. a dachahund NON lover will love this book as much as a dachshund lover because of the way the book designed. Kids also can learn how to read by using this box, BIG BOLD SIMPLE Types make all the photos in everypage POP-UP. One picture per page (aka minimalize) makes this book looks very LUXURY. I dont understand of ppl saying this book doesnt have enough pictures , hello.... this is a $18.00 worth of money! this book is so well designed! I think this book has more than enough BEAUTIFUL pictures! anyway, if you have $18 tp spare on a book.... and if you appreciate good design/photograph.. or if you are just a dachshund lover... this is a MUST HAVE book!!!!
