Editorial Reviews

From the Manufacturer
The WH14DL 14.4-Volt lithium-ion cordless impact driver is ideal for working in tight spaces or compromised positions such as on a ladder or under a deck to performing lightweight work such as hanging doors and installing cabinets and windows. Powered by HXP 3.0Ah batteries from Hitachi, the new lithium ion technology generates 3x the life of standard batteries. They are significantly lighter to reduce the overall weight of the tools they power. And Hitachi's HXP lithium ion batteries are uniquely backwards compatible, meaning they will also work in 14.4-Volt DMR and DVF3 cordless tools for even more flexibility and value across the cordless line. This impact driver offers class leading 1240 in/lbs of torque. At the heart of Hitachi's new Lithium Ion impact driver is the industrial-grade, 2-piece motor with heavy gauge copper coils that makes it the most powerful and longest lasting. The impact driver features Hitachi's unique two-step speed switch located on the side of the handle that gives the user the ability to select Power Mode (0-2,600 RPM), for full speed applications or Save Mode (0-2,000 RPM), for more control and less power when the application requires. The 1/4hex chuck on the new impact driver saves time. Bits are secure and won't slip or fall out. Other features include an externally accessible carbon brush for quick and easy maintenance, replaceable armature, 2-piece magnet motor and a 5-position belt hook with integrated LED job light for convenience. Compact in length at only 6.3-Inch and lightweight at 3.3-Pound, the Lithium Ion 14.4-Volt Impact from Hitachi feels like a 9.6-Volt tool, while offering the power and performance of a 14.4-Volt. It is incredibly well-balanced.

Impressive Impact Driver5
I chose the 14.4V impact tool over the 18V version. The delivered torque is only slightly less, but the bulk of the tool is significantly less (the battery is smaller and lighter). The 14.4 battery recharges just fine in the universal charger that came with my 18V Hitachi tools.

Impact drivers are just terrific. This one is particularly nice - very light, compact, and POWERFUL. 3" long screws and 3/8" diameter lags are no problem. Use the "S" setting for ordinary wood screws or you will overdrive or even break them.

Battery life is impressive. The tool sits on my bench most of the time for use as a general-purpose screwdriver. In that role, I only have to swap batteries once every couple weeks. For more sustained jobs, a couple batteries will certainly get you through a day's hard work.

Hitachi's tool warranty is 5 years, which is among the best in the industry. Battery warranty is 1 year.

It is difficult for me to imagine that you will be disappointed in this tool.

Great impact, almost 3 times the torque of a 18V drill4
I've had this impact driver for about 3 weeks now and it works great. I had a problem in the beginning of shattering my bits, but with the switch set to "s" (for saver, I guess), the torque is cut in half, so no more broken bits. It still has almost 700 in-lbs in this setting, which is quite a lot. The battery has plenty of power to go most of the day, and the tool is much lighter that my 18V drill that it replaced. Highly recommended.

Hitachi 14V is a Great Driver2
Update on this driver. After using the Makita 14 impact driver for 3 years, I tried the Hatachi 14 Impact and was very satisfied with the weight and function of this driver. Its battery pack needs several recharge cycles to attain full capacity (as most rechargeables do). The battery pack is fairly light, but it feels like the plastic could not take much abuse. The 2 speed drive is great for fine detailed work, and overall I like this driver because I can attach it to my belt and not feel so weighted down when climbing latter, etc.
