Language is no barrier to providing your Spanish-speaking patients with the high quality of care they deserve
As a dedicated nurse or nurse practitioner you know that effective communication is key to providing your patients with the high quality of care they deserve. And for healthcare providers working in North America that often entails communicating with Spanish-speaking patients and their families.
A valuable resource for nurses with little or no Spanish-language experience, this book provides you with all the Spanish you need to do your job in a variety of settings.
Convenient, flexible, and complete, McGraw-Hill's Spanish for Nurses features:
-A Comprehensive Course Book--Using sample dialogues, numerous exercises, and more than 200 expert illustrations, the book introduces a vocabulary of 2,500 general and medical terms, builds familiarity with typical medical situations, and develops a greater awareness of Latino culture and its impact on healthcare issues. A bilingual glossary features 1,000 of the most useful medical Spanish terms for easy reference.
-Audio CDs--Featuring a variety of native speakers, the first two CDs contain vocabulary, phrases, and dialogues that reflect a wide range of common medical situations--everything from the first interview to medication instructions and follow-up--while the third zeros in on situations typically encountered in all areas of nursing. An accompanying booklet contains the full scripts and English translations of the dialogues.
-Continuing Medical Education Tests for CME credit--The ten CME tests contained in this booklet have been approved for a maximum of thirty hours in category 1 credit toward the American Medical Association Physician's Recognition Award. Test accreditation is sponsored by the University of Arizona College of Medicine at the Arizona Health Sciences Center.

Customer Reviews
Excellent for nurses
This book is an excellent reference for nurses to use to communicate with their Hispanic patients. I had never taken any spanish courses before and the material in the book was easy to understand and the cds that came with it helped with correct pronounciation. I highly recommend it!
Best Medical Spanish book I've read yet...
I'll start with the negative first: I was under the impression that this was a book specifically for nurses that came with 3 cd's. Instead, it is a book that is mostly for doctors, Complete Medical Spanish : A Practical Course for Quick and Confident Communication 2 cd's that accompany the book, and one cd that is specifically for nurses. There is also a pamphlet with some continuing education tests for doctors and the script of everything on the nurses cd. The fact that so little of the contents were specifically for nurses irked me a bit, given how much of the cover of the container is coverd up by "SPANISH FOR NURSES".
That being said, it is a great package, and I still rate it 5 stars. It is based off a Medical Spanish program the authors teach doctors. As such, it progresses in a logical and motivating way- unlike other medical Spanish books that either lack sufficient information, like Medical Spanish for Health Care Professionals: A New Approach, or books that bombard you with vocab list after list, without breaking things up, like Medical Spanish Made Incredibly Easy! (Incredibly Easy! Series). This program is full of relevant information, and has enough activities to help you learn it and prevent the feeling of drudgery that keeps so many from becoming fluent. While the book does seem geared toward doctors, there is enough overlap so it is still very relevant to nurses.
It is also more than a phrase book- it includes grammar lessons (applied to medically relevant sentences) so that beginners really learn the language, not just learn how to parrot phrases they don't entirely understand. This makes it possible to improvise, and create your own sentences when the need arises. I am intermediate, and so did not need information on conjugating verbs in the present tense. I was able to easily move beyond the irrelevant and focus on what I needed to learn.
The cd's are nice as well. They include vocabulary and dialogues, so you can hear pronunciation and get used to listening to and speaking in sentences.
I highly recommend it, even if the "for nurses" bit is stretching it.
