Imagine a world where creatures communicate by scent and taste as much as sound and sight, where meaning lives in every rock and stream, and every breeze brings a new voice…
A pair of linked novellas introduces us to the planet Kaa and its alien inhabitants. From the viewpoint of a remarkable alien, Dleef, we witness a world alive with sensation and emotion; and we meet a Human explorer, Treyl, who is witness to a powerful and profound transformation. For on Kaa, consciousness and sapience are new experiences — and Treyl is present at nothing less than the birth of intelligence and culture on Kaa.
Sixty years later, with the Human galaxy convulsed in war, Kaa’s fragile and beautiful society is menaced by the arrival of a notorious war criminal. Standing in his way is Captain Le Galvao of the Terran Empire. But Le is opposed by the Human inhabitants of Kaa. For in the depths of the forest, a secret project is underway, a project that could alter the future of Humanity…

Review
...a new novel about alien culture that echoes LeGuin... -- SFRevu, August 2003
From the Publisher
As a writer and editor, Don Sakers has explored the thoughts of sapient trees, brought Carmen Miranda's ghost to Space Station Three, and beaten the "Cold Equations" scenario. Now, in lyrical language and stunning imagery, Don shows us a world vastly different from our own, yet hauntingly familiar. A VOICE IN EVERY WIND is a beautiful, thoughtful example of science fiction at its best.
The first section of the book was published in AMAZING STORIES. A VOICE IN EVERY WIND is part of Sakers’ ongoing Scattered Worlds series.
About the Author
Don Sakers is the author of DANCE FOR THE IVORY MADONNA (Speed-of-C, 2002) and THE LEAVES OF OCTOBER (Speed-of-C, 2003), and editor of CARMEN MIRANDA'S GHOST IS HAUNTING SPACE STATION THREE (Baen, 1990).

Harmonious coexistence on an alien world
These "two tales of the Scattered Worlds" hold up on their own as well as an integral part of this universe's chronology. The setting of both pieces is the planet Kaa whose ecosystem is lyrically depicted. Its alien/human dynamic comes to life through the perspectives of various viewpoint characters. To the author's credit, harmonious coexistence and the futility of war emerge as two thematic threads of these narratives that are mere components of a complex yet sophisticated, well-conceived cosmos.
