Software is hard to use correctly
Obviously the port is not what you are paying for (that would have cost $10 max!). The port itself looks nice and goes well with the Flash Voyager memory sticks. It is made of a nicely textured rubber that holds well to a computer desk even though it is pretty light weight. My problem with this product is that it took me 3 times to install the software that came with the port before it would work correctly. Once it did work, the settings were really tricky too.
The first time it worked, but then when it asked if I wanted to update the software, I let it. DO NOT UPDATE this software when it gives you the option because it then converts it to a 15 day trial version of the software (so you'll have to re-install it)!!! I've notifed their customer service about it, and they thanked me for the input as they "work out bugs" etc. Their customer service was responsive via email, but there might have been a little bit of a language barrier because it took me asking the question several different ways to get the answer.
The second time I tried to install the software, it took 5 minutes for the CD to autoplay and then it would not let me install it. So after cleaning out my registry from the first uninstall, the third time was the charm and it installed. Then upon install, the first time I ran the backup software it worked well; that is, until I tried to add new files to my original backup. It overwrote the original backup I did and replaced it with ONLY the several new files!
It gives an option to run as "backup" which converts your files to a proprietary storage file apparently, or to run as "copy" which directly copies the files from your hard drive to the flash memory. I was disappointed to find that the copy setting is NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE ONE BUTTON SETTING that the port is made for. To get it to copy (so that you can access the files from any computer without having to first install the software), you have to actually open up the software, specify which files you want to copy, and then run the program. To me this voids the whole purpose of it, because it is not that hard to copy files to a flash memory yourself without sofware.
Then there was the confusion with the different settings for backing up your computer. One setting overwrites the previous data entirely and flags the file as having been backed up, another merely adds on the data but re-writes any older files, another doesn't re-write anything but just adds on new files without flagging the files as backed up. THIS IS CONFUSING because the instruction manual and software don't explain this well enough, and it took me 3 separate attempts at adding backup files to figure out the correct setting I wanted. Being that it took around an hour+ to back up 13 gigs of data, this was frustrating having to do it several times to get it to work. "Overwrite" and "Incremental" is the setting combination that worked for me that finally allowed me to add new/updated files to a previous backup.
Overall for the money, it is not a bad system. Everyone can use DVD's to back up their files, but how many times do you actually do that??? This flash system is nice because it's easy to do and just let it run in the background and you don't have old DVD's to throw out or destroy once you burn a new one. But the headaches with the software (and half a day wasted trying to figure it out) will not allow me to give it more than 3 stars.
