                                                                                                                                   âCOMMUNICATION QUARTERLY

The popular book that has helped readers to organize a rigorous survey and evaluate the credibility of other surveys by giving them practical, step-by-step advice, has been updated and revised with new content, references, and examples. The Third Edition of How to Conduct Surveys: A Step-by-Step Guide focuses on the issues in survey research that have become prominent since the publication of the bestselling Second Edition. Writing in a clear and accessible style, author Arlene Fink once again provides students with new information on computer-assisted and interactive surveys, guidelines for preparing informed consent statements for survey respondents, new survey data analysis techniques, and much more!

New to the Third Edition:

- Covers how to organize data for analysis to help students, for example, create a code book

- Illustrates how to create reports and present them using computers and PowerPoint slides

- Includes in-depth coverage of human subjects protections, which is a critical issue for today’s surveyors

- Shows researchers and students how to employ the Internet and e-mail in their own work

- Provides links to “surveys in practice” to demonstrate effective uses of surveys

- Reflects upon the increasing reliance on Internet surveys and e-mail, and covers privacy issues and the electronic management of data - all to provide readers with the most up-to-date information on conducting surveys in today’s technology-savvy world

How to Conduct Surveys is an ideal text for any undergraduate or graduate course across the social sciences that covers survey research. It is also an excellent resource for anyone looking for a quick-guide reference tool on conducting surveys. (20061030)

Editorial Reviews

Review
Ronald R. Powell ScienceDirect : "This book presents a thoughtful, succinct overview of survey research methods. The author's extensive experience in conducting survey research and in training others to do the same is reflected in the practical advice given throughout the work. It does an admirable job of presenting the basics in a generally clear, easy to read style."

Rhonda Lunemann Journal of the Society for Technical Communication : "I recommend the book as a desk resource if you are considering conducting a survey in the near future or if you have to prepare a presentation on survey results."

Review

"The questionnaire design section contains many examples of how not to word questions. . . . The section on scaling is also useful and evaluators in education especially will find the summary of benefit. There is also a good section on types of evaluative research designs that might use surveys. Longitudinal surveys and normative designs are summarized concisely and clearly."
