The Booklet Cover is Deceiving
Were you to look at the cover of PRIMA DONNA ON A MOOSE, a photo of Mary Lou Fallis seemingly clad for the second act of TOSCA or a very old fashioned production of THE MERRY WIDOW, with a goofy smile on her face, sitting astride a goofy looking Moose, you would likely assume that you were about to get funny songs or a funny send up of songs. In fact, the songs are almost all serious, and they are not sung "tongue in cheek". A compendium of Canadian popular music from the early 1800s to around 1920, the songs are often very sentimental, but Fallis sings them in a straightforward and
appealing manner which is not in the least condescending.
Fallis, a stalwart of the Toronto music scene for more than forty years, still has a very attractive voice, only having a bit of trouble with some high notes.
The clever arrangements are by John Greer, who also conducts, and are played by members of the Toronto Symphony. There are also choral sequences by The Victoria Scholars, a group that usually performs Renaissance music. One of the 'Scholars' singers (uncredited) beautifully sings a quote from the hymn LEAD KINDLY LIGHT as part of the song THE ORGANIST'S LAST AMEN. (This is perhaps the most sentimental song of the lot, which is really saying something.)
The sound recording is excellent, flattering to Fallis, and to both the instrumental and choral ensembles.
There is a very nice essay in the booklet, and full song texts.
