| Mosquito traps use carbon dioxide, octenol (a natural odor lure) and/or UV light to attract mosquitoes and other biting flies. Some traps use burning propane to generate carbon dioxide, others use bottled CO2 gas. The value of these traps is mostly as a decoy. They may not totally eliminate mosquitoes, and other biting flies, but will lure these biters away from people when used properly. Place traps away from people and between you and breeding sources such as ponds, streams or swampy areas. Continue to use mosquito repellents and drain standing water in the landscape to reduce areas where mosquitoes breed near homes. Be realistic in your expectations. Traps won't eliminate your mosquito problems but they are a good (albeit expensive!) addition to your arsenal.
