Therapy Dogs: Compassionate Modalities is a book that includes a DVD. It takes readers beyond warm and fuzzy visits, to observable therapeutic exercises that are functional as well as fun. The 46-minute DVD contains an introduction to the important roles associated with every animal-enhanced intervention. Then, seven goal-directed vignettes demonstrate visiting, brushing and petting, putting equipment on the dog, walking the dog, retrieving, floor exercises, and small dog exercises. Two lists are associated with each vignette. The first list identifies canine skills, to help dog trainers and instructors prepare their clients to participate in similar exercises. The second list identifies specific treatment goals, to increase health care providers’ awareness of therapeutic possibilities associated with similar exercises. More than 80 functional goals are identified. Important issues that relate to each application demonstrated on the DVD are discussed throughout the book. The book also contains information, identified as "sidebars" and "points to ponder," relating to issues that are only cursorily addressed during the DVD. Both the book and DVD are chaptered to allow readers/viewers to move easily between the book and DVD.
